Do you set S.M.A.R.T. goals?
I was reading the Low GI Diet Revolution book and was pleased to have the SBD Confirmed as a smart choice when it comes to food choices, since the foods on our "allowable" list are mostly low in GI.
The book had a statement that I thought was a good reminder for us all and wanted to share with you all....
"Making Changes begins with setting goals. Ideally, your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-specific (SMART)."
To say "I will lose 20 pounds in one month" is not only unrealistic, but also unhealthy.
Know yourself... if you know that tonight you will reach for the chips while watching TV, grab a healthier snack, like celery or apple with peanut butter... or if you feel bored and eat (as I do) go for a walk instead... by journaling your eating habits and what you were feeling and doing while eating, you can find out what you eat and why, is it hunger (mealtime) or is it boredom? This information now becomes a tool for you to use in deciphering wether you need to reach for that apple (because it's time to refuel) or head out the door for a walk, or pick up a puzzle to keep your hands and mind busy because you are bored.
I know for me being reminded to set SMART goals not only encourages me to continue to learn to eat healthy and exercise at intervals that will keep me going in the LONG run, but also keep me from setting myself up for disappointment.
