I was wondering if anybody could share with me any ideas for low calorie options to keep in the house..................On my first day (today) I found that is hard to keep on track when your house if full of chips and peanuts. Also granola cereal is a killer. Thanks for the help.
Popcorn - not pre-bagged, I pop it myself in my whirly-pop on the stove. So much volume for so few calories!
Greek or regular yogurt (I like nonfat), and some frozen fruit. Quick, healthy fruit-flavored yogurt, lots of protein, really delicious.
Crackers (Wafer thins, or Rykrisps, or any other reasonably low-calorie, whole grain cracker) with Laughing Cow wedges or string cheese/cheddar sticks.
Fruit is always good, ultimately portable, and delicious in season!
I'm also fond of making little lettuce roll-ups...take a piece of lettuce, top with deli meat, a little mustard, chopped pickle...roll and eat.
Veggies and dips are easy to keep on hand, and are usually really high volume for the calories.
Lowfat Nancy's Cottage Cheese (one of the very few cottage cheeses i like), sour cream, pistachios, any woody fruit that's in season, or low GI berries, cucumbers, celery sticks and almond butter.
I'm working on getting a good sized package of laughing cow cheese and priceclub prices, instead of the smaller packages for waaay too much money.
mandalinn - I have to try your lettuce roll-ups, those sound fantastic. i remember the south beach recipe book had some really great low-cal roll ups as well. Thank you for reminding me!
Red pepper strips, carrot sticks & grape tomatoes with laughing cow cheese
Deli turkey wrapped around 1/8th of an avocado
walnuts & grapes or other fruit
greek yogurt or cottage cheese with blueberries, walnuts and a drizzle of honey
string cheese and a few olives
apple and peanut butter
hardboiled eggs
You'll notice that these have protein and fat---I find that both are important for satiety. Carbs alone tend to make me hungrier and I eat more. I'd rather spend a few calories on a healthy fat and feel satisfied.
if your looking for more snacky type foods like splurge foods I have 60 cal sugar free pudding cups, 10 cal sugar free jello's, special k bars only 90 cals!, dried cherries and cranberries- they remind me of fruit roll ups!, Breyers all fruit popsicles, I love the coconut ones and they are only 45 cals! 100 cal smart pop pop corn, all brothers natural freeze dried fruit chips soo yummy! and tart! I get those eating right pre packaged snacks they are made for kids I tihnk but they have like grapes/ string cheese combo, apple/ peanut butter combo, celery/ ranch combo, carrots/ ranch combos. and they are anywhere from 45-70 calories..
laughing cow cheese on half a whole wheat English muffin or on a 40 cal piece of toast
frozen fruit like grapes and raspberries, straw berries ,etc
clementines, banana's , pre sliced apples like chiquita apple bites
dannon light and fit yogurts only 80 cals,
south beach diet cottage cheese cups only 80 cals as well.
I love things that are pre portioned that comes in their own little bags or containers so I don't have to think about it! Hope this helps!

Apples
mozzarella string cheese
100 calories English muffins (this morning I had one with fat free cream cheese mixed with cinnamon and sweet and low...)
Sugar free puddings and Jello packs
South Beach high protein cereal bars
fruit and yogurt are my main snacks. I also *usually* keep a gallon zip lock baggie full of raw fresh veggies...(cauliflower, broccoli, baby carrots and celery)...all washed, trimmed and ready to go in the fridge. If it starts to get old, I throw it in a giant skillet with a little olive oil and garlic and stir-fry it.
My new fav after dinner dessert is 3oz strawberries, 3oz blackberries, 1tsp splenda, and 30g fat free Reddi Whip (I have a digital scale & it helps with things like whip cream). 109 calories and YUMMY!
I always have a glass of water before deciding if im hungry or was i just thristy. My standby for snacks are string cheese, yogurts, frozen fruit.I also love prunes as a snack but not to often.
