Talking Aloha! Military spouse in Hawaii.... looking for support!

Aloha from Hawaii!

I am a Navy spouse stationed in Hawaii. I came across this site and thought how cool it is to have a support site like this! I was a hardcore gym rat last year (when my hubby was deployed) and ever since he came back, we have been eating at his favorite restaurants (no Chili's or Cheesecake Factory in Guantanamo Bay)and slacking on the exercise big time!!! He has been back since March 2008. I used to weigh 235 when I moved here and thanks to WW, LA Weight loss (no longer members of both) and just plain dieting and exercising has done wonders for my weight loss. For someone my height, I should NOT weigh this much (currently 184) and I am willing to get on a roll again! I have been meaning to go to back to the gym but have been feeling self conscious since I gained about 15 pounds and paranoid that the people that I used to see on a regular basis will think, "OMG, look at her now, she became huge!" I know that for my height, you are thinking wow, 5'1 and if you were 15 lbs lighter, you must have weighed about 165-170ish... Yes, that is true but many people thought I weighed 140! I was very toned, easily could I fit into a size 10 and maybe a size 8 skirt. Now I have been noticing that my size 12's are looking a little (just a little? What an overstatement!) ridiculous on me and I refuse to wear a size 14 again! Now I asked my sis on how much does she think I weigh now, she's like, hmm... well, like 160-170. GREAT. Instead of describing myself as voluptuous (hour glass figure), I can sheepishly describe myself as Veruca Salt-ish - you know that girl who blew up on the Willy Wonka movie. I had some good friends that I used to go to the gym with, but they moved away It seems like the only time my husband will go to the gym with me and eat healthy is when he has 3 weeks to weigh in! We will both lose weight together but later after his weigh in, we will go back to the cheeseburgers and pizza... Oh the horror...

To jump start my fitness regimen, I recently bought a Wii Fit. To the naysayers out there who say that the Wii Fit does jack for their weight loss is a crock. I have had it for 2 weeks and have lost 4 lbs! No lie! I guess I average 4-5 days a week (it's football season and we only have one HDTV where the Wii Fit is hooked up to, so I would do it daily but again, it's football season...) . I bought the Jillian Michaels game, but for some reason, either I am doing something wrong, but the controls are hard to control. I intend on getting DDR2 soon but I guess for that I will write on a the Wii fitness challenge thread. I also have a treadmill in my garage, but lets just say that our cat's litter box is in there... I just want to use the Wii Fit where I can feel comfortable going back to the gym again.

Anyways, to make a long story short, as a military spouse, we are always moving every 3-5 years. I hope to make friends on here that will last longer than our stay at different locations . I refuse to be a candidate for the gastric bypass surgery and never want to see myself as a qualified candidate AGAIN (you know, you have to be over 100+ lbs to be qualified for it). The day my doc told me that I should have a consult with a surgeon for gastric bypass, was the day that I told myself that I will show him that I can keep my weight under 200. I have been famously known for having my weight flunctuate like Oprah.. Sometimes people who I haven't seen in years will ask me if I am small or big again! Also, like Oprah, I have no children. I would like to have one (sometime soon) but my doc wants me to lose some weight first. And recently turning 39, lets just say my biological clock is ticking, more like racing really fast!

Okay, I have been creating a novel here but (yes, unintentionally!) if you would like a buddy who would like to work out and get back into shape, or need support in your weight loss, or need a friend, then I'm your girl!

Good luck to everyone's weight loss journey!

Welcome to the forum!

When I was reading your great intro, my first thought was, "She needs to take charge of her own weight loss and not rely on others."
I don't mean here. This is a great place for support, and if you stick around, you can make some wonderful, lasting friends.
But don't rely on anyone else to help you cut the calories or exercise. If your husband wants to eat at those restaurants, determine that you're there for the company, but that you'll make a healthy choice from the menu. (well, the healthiest you can find )

And forget about not feeling comfortable at the gym. That's an excuse I used for years. The gym is there for you! You're not going there to impress anyone. You're giving your body a gift, and you don't have to let others "make" you feel uncomfortable.

You can do this!
Please post anywhere you like, and give us a shout if you need help. We're all here for each other.

Wow - thanks for the analysis. I guess you figured me out by reading 1 post, huh? I didn't know I was relying on others here for support, thanks for pointing that out to me. Maybe it's my fault for making my 1 post sound like I'm some desperate, co-dependent military spouse, analyze away. I didn't come aboard to be welcomed by a quick judgement from the moderator (btw - here's the knife that I pulled out of my back) - I guess my definition of "support" is different from yours.

Hi and welcome!!
I just joined myself but I read your intro and noticed you bought a Wii Fit!

I work at a video game store and can tell you from a personal stand point that the Wii Fit is a good start! Most people look at it as just a game but the Japanese designed it to help with toning your body and exercise. This isn't to say you shouldn't go outside for a jog, or go to the gym, but it will definitely help! Drink lots of water and don't give up hope! :

hey! and welcome! you have DEFINITLY come to the right place!
It's great place to meet some amazing people that have similar goals! I find that key to at least my weighloss regime.
I recently 'married into the military' Army for me though.
My Dh is deployed at the moment so I think I can relate/am beginning to learn how meeting and leaving lots of people in daily life is going to be part of my life.
anyway.. enjoy the site and just start a posting! you will make some amazing friends here!
Msg me anytime!!

I think i'm the only person that's out of the 'wii fit' loop. i need to start looing into it!

Being a military spouse is hard stuff, it takes a strong woman to stand by their man. As long as you don't lose communication with him, friends, and family, it's all good You have a year to surprise your hubby with a new body! That was my goal when my hubby was last deployed. Now my goal is to move my butt when I can! Simple, but baby steps for me!

The Wii fit is fun! I wear my heart rate monitor to make sure I reach my targeted heart rate. It tracks your bmi and weight so it keeps you accountable. In no means is this a full gym workout, but hey, if it gets my target rate up, you can improve your posture, do your yoga and strength moves AND have fun, it's all good.

Let me know if you need any help with military life as well as weight loss!
