Default The carb monster

Good morning everyone.I hope everyone is well. I had my gbs on jan 14th 2008,since then have lost 120 pounds so far.Feeling great,so grateful. Now I am a compulsive overeater, which I have been doing really well with.I now am in my own place, loving it,but evenings I am wanting to eat.Not hungry just wanting comfort foods.Meaning crackers, popcorn. Now I don't think there is anything wrong with having that sometimes, but I did feel myself just eating mindlessly last nite.As we know, the surgery doesn't fix the brain. Any tips on what helps you in the evenings. thanks alot
Kim
P.S. I want to nip this in the butt, before it get's to be a problem.

Hi everyone I have missed everyone here.I am going to try to catch up.
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((the group))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

thanks everyone Have a great day.

Hi Kim!!!!

I know what you mean...I have the same problem. I have been doing things with my hands in the evening...my daughter is learning to knit, so I have been trying to also! I am a crochet kind of girl and embroidery that sort of thing...I love to draw or paint (that can be very consuming when I get into a piece!)... I am on the computer a lot...I am madly in love with my DVR! No commercials! It's hard in the evening when you just want to watch Judge Judy and you're bombarded with pics of pizza and McD! ...love to play music and have been really getting into making new friends, going out and dancing, watching movies, going to dinner parties, it really has been keeping me from the fridge! Oh, I met a sweet, wonderful man too...that keeps me preoccupied! hehe

What ever I can do to keep this up, I will do it! I consider surgery a gift, a privilege...we still have to do the footwork to keep it going. I love my results and am grateful for you and everyone else here for helping me to stay on track!

Angela

Hey what is wrong with mindless, overeating? LOL! Seems like I've been doing the same thing in the evenings. Even my DH commented on how he seems to be more tired in the evenings now and so hungry. I notice when I away all day I don't over eat, but as soon as I get inside this house, I'm constantly on the prowl for something "good"! I just comments on this very thing in another thread and just KNOW I can't be that hungry, that soon. Why does food have to be such a big part of my "emotional" life. What do I have in my life that is causing me to try and eat crap? Nothing, Nada, Nil, Zero. I'm perfectly happy, have enough to get buy, but still try to eat myself to death. Why does food still have to be on of my all the time, every waking moment. I'm taking a look at the kinds of protein and stuff I'm eating during the day and reevaluating everything. I don't want to sit around and munch on something low calorie all evening so that I don't eat something I shouldn't. Dear God, why didn't they cut the string from my stomach to my brain!!!!!! My Dh asked me last night if I would like him to make me a diet root beer float!!! I just about bit his head off shouting NO! But, if he had been foolish enough to make me one anyway, I would have drank it. Don't have any answers for you. And I wish to God, I did!!!

I've been so stupidly hungry, prowling....saw this at another website and it sounds like really, really, good advise....Credit goes to MelissaF:

"More than likely you are ingesting the wrong carbohydrates if I were to take a wild guess. White refined carbs raise our blood sugar and crashes it down making you want to snack and snack and snack... try to cut out the carbs for a day or focus on complex ones like whole grains and nonstarchy veggies, low glycemic index fruits, think like a diabetic even if you weren't or aren't one now. We pretty much follow the same rules except we eat more protein. The more you make dense protein first and foremost the better off you will be. Plan your meal plan the night before for the next day.. yes its very regimented but sometimes as food addicts we have to take this extra step in order to have success over our old habits and food demons. Remember why you had this surgery, you don't want ot be that person again. I have to tell myself that too.. no I am far from perfect but these are the things I do that help me the most. Lots of water to fill up between meals and stay busy. "

Someone also suggested that we fill upon warm water or hot teas in between meals.

Ladies, I highly recommend Judith Beck's "The Diet Solution" to help with these food issues. It is a 6 week program of cognitive therapy solutions that works with any diet. There is a very active Beck thread under General Diets. It really works to change the way you think about food. My mantra has now become "NO CHOICE" when I have to make a decision about having something that doesn't support my weight loss goals - meaning the choice for success is don't give in and have it.

I was worrying over the fact that I wanted to snack in the evenings when I came home from work. I sometimes don't get home until 10 and I didn't want to start a bad habit.

So, I thought about it and I plan for a snack in the evenings. I usually have some greek yogurt (130 cal...and 17g of protein and I think it has 3 grams of sugar and 7 carbs) so the nut. facts are good. I usually mix in some manderin oranges and some splenda. It's really good..helps me hit my protein goal for the day and it gives me that snack that I'm looking for. Last night I was out of my yogurt (boo hoo) so I ate a quarter of a peeled apple with a smear of LF peanut butter and some dried cranberries on top. It was good too. It was low in fat, had some protein in it, and "good for me carbs".

I have to be very careful about crackers especially saltines. I use to love them and I know that I can eat them..but I stay away. Those buggers will call my name if I open up the pack. They slide down so easily and I find I want more and more of them.

So, if you want t snack I say.....plan it and eat it. That way you don't have any guilt.

Also, SF popsicles are a godsend when it comes to snacking. You can have those and count them towards your liquids for the day and they are YUMMY!!!

I also wanted to add that Greek Yogurt is full of all of those probiotics that so many yogurts are boasting about now. Many yogurt companies are putting the probiotics back into the yogurt....the Greek Yogurt..never takes them out!!!

HTH,

Chrissy
