I don't know about the mayo clinic diet. But I can tell you that you need to find whatever plan you can stick to for the rest of your life. You need to be able to do this the rest of your life to keep the weight off. I count calories, eat healthy, clean food and exercise 4-5 days a week. I feel I can keep this up forever. I also have a cheat day once a week.
