Unhappy Sick - did I over-do it?

Hi there,

I was unsure which category to post this in, so apologies first off if it's in the wrong place.

I decided that this week I was going to up my exercise from 30mins of cardio 5 days a week to 45 minutes Mon, Wed and Fri and 30 mins on Tues and Thurs.

So as today is Monday, I did my first 45 minute work out - nothing extraordinarily above and beyond what I'd do in 30 minutes - I did 25 minutes of fast walking/jogging (intervals) and then the remaining 20 minutes I kept my pace to a fast walk, interspersed with a couple of 30 min rest periods of my normal walking pace.

I kept hydrated throughout, and I ate regularly today (had lunch around 1.5-2hours prior to working out).

However after my workout, about 20 minutes later in the shower, I started feeling queasy and I threw up my lunch
I'm still not feeling 100% now, and it's been around 2.5 hours since I exercised.

So basically, did I over do it? Was 45 minutes too much of a leap from 30 minutes? Did I do something else wrong? It's not the food, as my sister ate the same as me and is feeling completely fine, the only thing different is that I exercised.

How long did you wait after you ate before you exercised?

I'm pretty sure I included this in my query, but for clarification, it was around 2 hours.

I'm not sure you can say from one event. It could have been anything, even the food, because when it comes to food born illnesses, it's very common for one person to get sick and another eating the same food to get sick a day later or not at all. Some people (I'm one) tend to have a bit of a cast-iron stomach when it comes to food born bacteria, and others are more susceptible to it (like my husband).

It could be that you're getting a virus, symptoms can take days to develop after you've been exposed.

So, it could be that you overdid it, but it also could be coincidence.

Yick... I don't even think yick is a work, it's kind of like yuck. But that's what came to mind when thinking of a virus .. I don't have time to get sick haha.

I think I'm going to try 45 mins again on Wednesday - but in the morning before I've eaten.

It wasn't exercise that made you sick. You may have a food sensitivity. Did you eat any kind of shellfish for lunch? Or, it could be that you and your sister have different tolerance for bad food. But I'm pretty sure, although I'm not a doctor or health care provider, that it wasn't the exercise.

The only time exercise made me sick was when I got dehydrated. If you are going to exercise before eating breakfast, make sure you have a drink of water! Also, it's always been recommended to me that if you exercise in the morning you eat something very light first, just to get your metabolism going. (A small piece of fruit has been the suggestion.)

Good luck

This happened to me once, but it was from lack of sleep and because it was incredibly hot outside. I threw up my breakfast soon after I came back from exercise (eating before I exercised).

It might be a sleep thing... But in general, to answer your question, I don't think upping the exercise would do that to you. I often rush into an exercise "program" from zero exercise to about 2 hours and 45 min of walking... Nothing like that happens to me. Your body is really adaptable, so as for answering your specific question if the exercise did it: "No". Buuut, congrats on upping it...

Yeah, I'm with the others. I really don't think 15 mins is enough of a difference that it would make you sick after. Especially if it was 20 mins later that you got sick.

The only time I've ever gotten sick from intense exercise I got sick IMMEDIATELY. Like .. I felt that I was overdoing it, I started to feel queasy and lightheaded, I quit what I was doing, and immediately puked.

I would think that at 20 mins after, there's something else going on there.

Hmm now I am pretty confused, because the meal I ate 2 hours before exercising was leftovers from the dinner the night before - and yes, it was properly stored and reheated.

I am now at a loss - I guess the only way to find out is to do 45 minutes again tomorrow and see how that goes.

Thanks for your help though, I guess nothing is black and white with these things.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it becomes a problem. It really could be anything.

It doesnt' have to be bad food or too much exercise. It could just be that your tummy wasn't ready for food. It could be that your tummy wasn't ready for some type of food you put in it. One thing I've noticed as I get older is that sometimes my tummy just ... reacts. I could eat something for dinner at night, get up the next day and have leftovers for lunch, and my tummy says "uh uh".

Our bodies are weird like that.

Obviously if it keeps on happening, then you should be concerned, but one time? Nah. I wouldn't worry too much!
