Default Health Care Issues

There's an interesting article here that talks about the health risks of being overweight ... not just the standard ones that we all know about, but how being overweight can affect the level and type of care you receive when you are ill.

http://refusetoregain.typepad.com/my...-maintain.html

Thought it might be interesting to share.

Interesting article - thanks for posting! I love reading about maintenance, and it affirmed much of what I believe to be true.

Thanks for the post, PhotoChick. When I think about it, it all seems fairly obvious - fat is an insulator and there's no reason to think that it wouldn't insulate against x-rays and ultrasound. This is just something I've never really thought about before.

When I read your op I thought it was something different. I work in health care. A statement I once heard is that the two groups of people who receive the poorest care are the mentally ill and the obese. But that's another whole thread...

Definitely on the bolded part. I will say, though, I think that my obesity is why my gallbladder wasn't diagnosed sooner. It seemed like the docs were going through the gauntlet of the "usual" obesity related medical conditions before looking at the very obvious {my gallbladder was shot and needed to come out ASAP}.

I was a hospital social worker for 13 years. One of my friends used to say she was going to write a manual on how to get the best care possible...and title it "It pays to be cute".

Sadly, still true.

I have often felt that obese people get inferior care. I have been subject to this over the years. I don't think that some doctor's know how to treat big people.

That being said...I had one doctor, when I lived in Michigan, who really 'got it' when it came to treating obese folks. I am to have had her when I lived there.

Thanks for the article.
