Default Night hunger after exercising.

I wasn't sure where to put this - exercise, food talk or here. So, here it is.

I'm back on track again with my diet and so far so good. But I have run into a bit of a snag.

I eat great through the day. Enough meals. Healthy foods...etc. I go jogging/walking at about 7:30-8 pm every night. But about 30 minutes or so after I'm done I feel so hungry. So, I've been giving in and eating some type of sliced up veggies. Not much. I give myself one serving and feel better. But the question is, should I be eating so soon before bed? A friend mentioned running in the morning but with a working husband and a 4 year old son at home that isn't possible. My only time is at night, plus the Florida humidity is killer during the day anyways. Should I try not to eat a snack so late? If I should eat, what would probably be the best thing to munch on to curb my hunger that won't stand in the way of weight loss? Or should I eat something before I go on my jog/walk? If so, what would be the best choice of a before snack?

I always go for a walk after dinner, and am hungry before I go to bed. I usually just eat a piece of fruit and drink some water and I'm okay!

This always happens to me too when I exercise at night. Eating veggies also doesn't cut it for me and I usually get a stomach ache from them. I usually whip up some caffeine free tea and make one slice of toast (dliteful whole wheat by sarah lee ROCKS only 45 cals a slice) and just put a little honey on it. Cuts the hunger right away.

Someone once told me to eat protein afterwards too, but I'm not so sure... I guess maybe grilled chicken? (processed stuff has too much salt for eating that close to bedtime) or maybe a hard boiled egg?

Sliced up vegis aren't going to hurt you at all. I eat Kashi cereal after a workout with strawberries and skim at night. 3 points. Sometimes I will have a bowl of broccoli and tomatoes w/sour cream ranch. 2 points. I have to eat late because I don't get done with ball until late. So I don't end up eating until 9:30 some nights. I have managed to lose about 40 pounds this way.

Actually you should ALWAYS have something to eat after you exercise and you should ALWAYS make sure that whatever it is you have includes some protein to help rebuild muscles that you've worked while you work out.

It's better to have a bit of a protein snack closer to bed than to go to bed hungry after exercising. You're not just going with an empty stomach - you're not giving your muscles any fuel to rebuild with otherwise.

You ladies are awesome. Thank you so much for the advice. Hubby seems to preach that you shouldn't eat after 7 pm, no matter what. Now I know better. I'll definately get something in with protein after I jog/walk at night.

Thank you PhotoChick - I didn't know that I needed protein afterward. I'm still learning about nutrition so thank you for that advice. I really appreciate it.

Actually you should eat carbs before exercise and protein within one hour of ending exercise. The protein is to help your muscles repair and it will also keep you feeling full. I use a scoop of protein powder in water (28 g of protein and 110 calories) after exercising.

Any way you can exercise a little earlier and eat dinner afterwards?
