Question If they ask, do you tell?

People at work have been asking me if I have been loosing weight. Of course I say yes, however it is almost always followed up with the question of how much? I kinda feel weird telling people how much I truly have lost so far. I am proud about the fact I have lost weight but would rather not share with people exactly how much.. That's just me though, I don't like being put on the spot. I always find myself saying " oh about 10lbs or so." Such a lie!! I realize soon I will have to up the amount since I will obviously will be loosing more!

It was kind of an adjustment for me (almost choked on my words the first time I said it out loud to someone) but I say exactly how much and follow it with "thank you for noticing"

It's getting harder for me to answer that question. Before I was happy to say "I've lost x amount of pounds." But now that the total is quite a bit and I am maintaining I feel a little awkward about it. I'm kind of embarrassed now when people ask. I may just smile next time and say, "Oh, a few" when someone asks the "how much" question.

I liked coming up with vague things that were honest, but not direct. Like "more than Nicole Richie, less than Queen Latifah".

Working in a clinic in a larger hospital setting I have close co-workers who hear every detail of my loss and cheer me on when I step on the scale. then there are the other staffers who I don't have much in common with. My work friends know all the details so they don't ask but sometimes during rounds to other areas I get asked questions. I usually ignore them if I feel they are asked out of trying to make me feel ashamed for being fat (which, sometime it is and its obvious). other times I stick with the standard "I'm just watching what I eat and being more active, the number on the scale isn't important to me" I am such a liar! But you know, those numbers, where I started, how much I've lost, what my goal is are presonal and unless I'm covered with a shroud of anominity like I've got here theres no way in **** I'm going to set myself up to be the laughing stock of the hospital. Some of the people here are just plain mean about a persons size and they should be the last people on earth to be so judgemental being in the healthcare field they should all show compassion. They do on the outside but behind closed doors the things I've heard them say would make you want to take a bat to their knees.

Now family is a whole different ball game. I ignore them completely because if they see you are making profress they try their hardest to sabatage it. Ohh, you have lost weight! I made you a lard pie with deep fried lard bisquits on top...enjoy

I like being noticed and complimented! I wouldn't mind answering how much, but usually they don't ask. I usually end up volunteering it at some point though. Not that I'm bursting to say it, but it usually just seems to be part of the conversation.

I do because it seems to get people really into wanting to lose weight themselves. Like "If she can lose 5 lbs, than so can I".

If you don't feel comfortable, you can always say that you don't weigh yourself, so you don't know for sure.

I give the vague answer like mandalinn. I look on that question the same as telling my age. If I want you to know I'll tell you ,you won't have to ask.An honest but vague answer works for many occasions.

I like to tell people how much I've lost. Like 'Kristananne', when people find out I lost so much it inspires them and makes them think -"if she can do it I can too" and then they usually proceed to ask how I lost the weight.

lol! Conversations go like this:

If they didn't know me when I was really big:

Them: "So how much weight have you lost?"
Me: "Like 120 pounds."
Them: "Holy crap! Thats like a Paris Hilton!"
Me: "Pretty much."

If they knew me but hadn't seen me in a while:

*a couple minutes of a silence*

Me: "It's me, Courtney."
Them: "Oh my god!"

heheh...I've had lots of crazy responses.

Funny, no one has ever asked me how much. I usually get 'wow, you've lost weight! You look great!' which kind of bothers me because this is usually from my old co-workers from like 3 years ago, and I'm about the same size I was then. hmmm...

Me too! I read like an open book, always have. I feel like I have dropped a very noticeable amount. Now if someone doesn't say anything, I start to question whether I look that different. I love it when they have a really blown away reaction. I don't base my self worth on other's perception of me, but it feels good to be acknowledged for all my hard work.

Depends on who is asking. At work, I tend to give a slightly more vague answer, "Oh, a little more than 50lbs. Still working on dropping a few more, though."

To friends & family: "I've lost 98.8 pounds and I'm frickin' proud! Now, let me tell you how I went about doing it..." It is at this point that my friends & family learn never to ask me again.

I saw a friend today who I haven't seen in a year. She kept looking at me, and finally she said, "Something's different!" - and then, very cautiously - "Have you lost a bunch of weight?"

I said, "Yep, almost 20 lbs."

She said, "From stress or something?"

I said, "No, I've actually been trying really hard - eating well, working out a lot."

After I said that, she told me that I look great. Then she said that it always annoys her when people ask if she's lost weight (I've known her for six years, and she's always been tiny), so she didn't want to ask.

I'm just happy someone finally noticed! I felt really validated.
