I have made no secret that my wife Angie was the biggest influence for good health in our family.
When we met I was a single dad, working full time and my kids were involved in church youth programs, athletics in school and recreational, and scouts. It was all I could do to get them around let alone feed them healthy...or so I thought Anyway I also was a smoker Those days are long gone.
I ran across a picture last night that had me doing my first 5K, 11 years ago next Friday. It was also the day I quit smoking for good! The picture had a date on the back, I never remembered the date...probably because I had quit many times before
Anyway as I took my dogs out for a 3.5 mile walk today without my life's partner as she is away until tonight, I got to wondering where I would be right now if she wasn't the good influence in my life.
My kids are grown up, have good jobs are still in sports and are very healthy. They would probably be without Angie in their life...but as for me...well, I could have very well been dead right now from some of my choices!
Neither me or my hubby are good influences on each other. My mom is my good influence/supporter/encourager and I hope to rub off of my husband someday as I improve in my journey.
I'm a nurse and I read a ton of nutritional info, online and in books, magazines so I am the driving force for good health in our family. My husband will eat whatever I prepare and is pretty good about exercising, doesn't smoke, goes to the Doctor when I nag him enough. He does like his beer though, loves ice cream and puts way too much brown sugar on his daily oatmeal. No amount of nagging is going to change some of his habits!
I didn't vote, because I would've voted that both my spouse and I are good influences. Of course we can't influence my child yet, exactly, because he's still in my womb as of today (even though he was due yesterday...)
My husband is more of a good influence with exercise because he's always been a runner, and his example made me one. I would probably be more of a good influence with nutrition because I have to think about it more. He can eat anything he wants and he still stays incredibly fit. Of course, he mostly eats healthy stuff anyway, but he just doesn't have to think about it.
As for other bad health habits, neither of us has any, so we're both good influences in that way!
Goodness Gary! I do the meal planning. I do the shopping. DH just eats it. Sure he says things like "I want more salads, more healthy foods" but does he act? No. If I serve salads two days in a row he's all "I'm tired of salads."
Now. How do I convince him we NEED to join a gym? Gary--help me out here!!!

He's still young yet ALLISON....I was that way when I was "his" age around my house it was "Not chicken and rice again!"
However I may have succeeded in one area. You know DH and I work together. Well, I usually feel guilty leaving work "early" if I don't have some kid-business to do. Well, DS got a letter from his sensei saying that he'll be eligible to test for his black belt in either November or February, but in order to be prepared, he basically has to go to the dojo every day. So, I said to DH last night, would you feel bad if I left work every day at 4:00 to pick up DS and take him to karate and then I'll go to the gym? Granted he won't be going with me, but he agreed that it would be a good thing to do!
When it comes to what goes IN our body, I am the head honcho. My fiance is in the military and is all about his daily exercising so he's the head honcho in the workout catagory. Together we make a pretty good team if I can get him to eat what I cook and he can train me to jog!! hehe
Since I start this time I've become the better influence. My DH is fit and a normal weight but he works a very physical job. I'm rubbing off on him in the food dept though
I've turned into a big health freak and pretty much everyone knows it.
My girlfriend hates healthy food and loathes exercise, BUT I've gotten her to eat some healthy cooking and get up off her butt every now and then anyway. She doesn't see why she should watch what she eats or bother exercising because she is young, healthy, and thin.
If I was (naturally) healthy and (naturally) thin, I'd probably have the same attitude!
It's hard to say what is better - with family in the house, you may have support, but you may also have sabotage. I have a niece and 2 nephews living with me (young adults), but I think they don't have any impact for or against the way I eat. Our food is pretty much separate. Once in a while I snag a chili cheese fry or bite of pizza and actually, I think that helps - I can enjoy one bite (OK, maybe two), once in a while, without having any more.
Yep; I made that point too...but apparently I'm offensive, so what I think/say doesn't matter anyway.
The attitude is a bit off-putting. Doesn't mean you're wrong, but it will push people away. Life is short and one thing we're all learning as we get healthier is that we are worth making choices to increase the positivity in our lives and decrease the negativity. Everybody will draw the line differently, but if you often feel like no one understands and everyone is picking on you, it can be difficult but rewarding to give it honest thought and make changes if you need to. Then again, sometimes people are picked on *because* they're right, and it's uncomfortable to people. I don't think that's the case here, but YMMV.

SORRY GALS
I didn't mean to offend anyone with the poll choices. I was just going for what I thought was the majority. I figure single people, for the most part, are influenced by mom or dad or all on their own making their own decisons.
