Default iphone app crazy

Anyone else crazy about iphone apps? I got a new iphone last week and I am nuts about it. My old phone was one of those crappy free phones from Verizon I got 3 years ago - it didn't do anything! (well, I suppose it was a phone at least).

So anyway, I love everything about the iphone - internet at my fingertips everywhere, easy texting (it was such a chore on my own phone), ringtones (so much fun!), emailing pictures, etc. I especially love the apps and have gone a little crazy. I mostly try to stick to the free ones, but I've paid for quite a few.

My current favorite apps:

Shazam (free) - Completely awesome music identifier. Click the app, click Tag, hold the speaker side of the phone up to the music, 30 seconds later, the song is identified and there's a link to itunes where you can automatically buy the song. The tags are saved, so you can go back and buy them later. It works GREAT - I identified a song off the TV last night during a scene in the Ghost Whisperer. I also kept "testing" songs during So You Think You Can Dance and it found every one of them.

Magic 8 Ball (either free or 99 cents, I can't remember) - ask a question, shake the phone, touch the 8 ball to reveal the answer. Works just like a real magic 8 ball except I can customize answers. Hilarious.

Restaurants (free) - nutritional info for lots of chains

Newsfeeds (all free) - Netnewswire, Mobile News, Express, VSnax, NYTimes and JAMD. JAMD is exceptionally cool because it gives "piles" of Getty images that you can sort through with your fingers.

BoxOffice (free) - put in my zip code one time, now I can see all the movie theatres in a 20 mile radius, movies/showtimes/rotten tomatoes ratings for each movie.

Tomatoes (free) - look up any movie, get a brief (one paragraph) Rotten Tomatoes synopsis with score.

Recorder - turn your phone into a digital voice recorder

Pandora (free) - play Pandora over the phone. Only drawback, works like an app and cuts off when you do anything else on the phone. Wish it worked more like the iPod function so I could listen to music in the background.

WeDict (free) - dictionary

iScopes (free) - daily horoscope

Units (.99 cents) - measurement conversions

Tip$ (free) - calculates tip, splits checks

Vicinity (2.99?) - based on your GPS, shows everything around you (restaurants, banks, gas stations, etc).

Cocktails (9.99 - I couldn't resist) - enter any drink, recipe displays, beautiful format/layout/appearance

Motion Poker (4.99) - a really cool game involving physically shaking the iphone to shake dice. Gorgeous graphics, beautiful design, you can unlock all sorts of extras

Phone Saber (free) - totally silly, your phone makes light saber noises when you wave it around

Bubblewrap (free) - goofy but satisfying, pop a piece of bubblewrap

What is everyone else digging for their iphone?

Shazam sounds great! Wow! Very cool.

I'm not on the "new" iPhone but I did upgrade the firmware to 2.0 on my "old" (*sniffle* Not old! Just not "new"! There, there, baby. Don't feel bad) one and put a few apps on it.

Probably my favorite is Urban Spoon. You give it a neighborhood and a type of food and a price range (or any one of those things, or two of them), and then SHAKE YOUR iPhone!! And it will give you a restaurant that matches those needs. Reviews, links, address and phone number, menus, etc.

It's awesome!!

I haven't tried the AIM (chat) app yet but I do have it installed. Not sure I'm a fast enough typist on the iPhone to want to chat using it.

I'm going to check out some of yours. Thanks for the list!

I am an iphone lover too! I live my life on it or have my life on it.
I don't have the new one, I am 2nd generation with the higher gigs.

My favorite (not an app yet, but link to web from the main page) is the fitness journal. www.fitnessjournal.org

It is just like the dailyplate.com, sparkspeople, etc. It logs calories, workouts, tells you when your shoes need replacing, it helps you track smoking if you are a quiting, and many many other things.
It keeps me logged in on my computers (work & home) and when i am out and about or just to lazy to get on the computer it works 100% with the iphone. Love it. It is keeping me on track so I don't have to drag my notebook around anymore.

I'm telling everyone that this phone has changed my life! I also only had the cheapest phones in the past. Everytime I'd workout, I'd have my cell sitting in front of me and I was always afraid of missing a call from my kids' school or something. Now, I don't have to worry at all because the phone just stops the music and I hear it ring! I also love the photos I can email to anyone at any time. I love the Rotten Tomatoes and movies in my area locator! My kids like the light saber feature! When I go somewhere w/ my kids, I can put youtube on for them if I need to talk to a doctor and so on. I forgot to mention that now, I don't have to carry a separate ipod, because all my music is here, along w/ all my contacts and calendar!

Love it love it love it love it.

There are so many that I haven't had a chance to load and play with them all.

Pandora rocks my world. My guy and I share a station and have so much fun with it. Yay that we can get it on the iPhone now.

The iTip one is good, too, although I'm generally good with tips, my guy is not.

Starmaps - maps constellations and tells you what should be visible when. It's kinda cool ... except that I live in such an urban area that I can't always see the stars. But when I'm travelling I hope to use it. My guy and his daughter went out the other day and used it to find a bunch of constellations - he said they had a great time.

Expense2Go - I downloaded but haven't really worked with it yet. It got the best reviews of the expense apps. I'm hoping it'll make it easier for me to track expenses for my business.

Frommer's New York. I'm planning to move to be in NYC for 2 weeks in October and then move there sometime next year some time and I'm loving being able to look things up and plan where I want to go and see once I'm there.

City Transit (also for NYC). I'm trying to learn the subway lines before I move there.

Tetris. I have highschool flashbacks. Nuff said.

Texas Hold'em. Yeah, I'm a poker geek.

This Day In History. I'm a historian by education. Can't help it. Any history geek or word geek apps and I"m there.

Weatherbug. Ihave it on my Firefox and it's cool to have it available on the iPhone too. I'm a bit of a weather/storm geek so I like having the info handy.

I wanted to find a good fitness and calorie tracker one, but really I like using Daily Plate and I don't want to split my tracking between two different systems. So I dunno. Maybe if one just pops out at me that I *have* to have it. We'll see. I also don't want to become one of those people who obsessively enters calories AT the dinner table. Bad enough I obsessively enter them when I get home.

The Grocery List one looks fun, but I'm not gonna spend $5 on it when I can just type in my own grocery list. Maybe if it were $2, I'd think about it.

I haven't picked a car log/mileage one yet, but I'm narrowing it down. I want something that will track business and personal miles, as well as gas fillups and miles per gallon. Has anyone tried one that they like?

And finally my guy bought me the WineSnob app, but it's not really what we thought it would be. I love wine and I ws hoping that it would be kind of a wine guide with ratings to various vinyards and years and so forth, but mostly it's just a wine reference. Dunno. Hope someone comes out with something better.

Jen ...

I looked at your friend's site and I gotta say I'm impressed. I'd totally pay more for his apps just for the coolness factor. Sheesh ... did I mention I'm a geek?

I'm gonna do some downloading and play.

Thanks PhotoChick for the feedback. I'll make sure to let him know.

I don't have an iPhone yet, but seeing all these fun apps makes me crave one even more.
