Question B12 Injections

Does anyone else get these injections monthly. After I get the injection I have trouble sleeping for about a week and I am ravenous in that week. I realize that not being so tired is a perk of the B12 but I can run on about 4 hrs of sleep for the week after the injection then it evens out to a normal 8 hrs of sleep. Before the injections started even taking a sublingual I was exhausted and averaging 12 -16 hrs of sleep a day.

Hey Ophelia924,

Why are you having B12 injections? Do you have a medical condition that requires them? Are they administered by an M.D.?

I had the Gastric Bypass and even with the sublingual's I wasn't absorbing enough to make my levels where my doc was happy with them. My MD is the one who gives them to me once a month. The reason I must have them is because I have a disease called Wernicke's Encepholapathy which is caused by a low Thiamine (B-1 level) Your body needs B-12 in order t process the B-1 (I finally found that information on my own when researching the disease).

It sounds like the B12 shots boost your metabolism, almost like speed. I'd discuss this with your doctor--it could be that your dose needs to be adjusted.

I'm going to move your post to "Weight Loss Surgery" because there may be more folks posting there who take B12 shots.

thank you for moving this post, JayEll!!!

Ophelia - you need to have a heart-to-heart with your doc. on the face of it, it sounds like either lowering the b12 dose, depending on how you're feeling by the time the next dose is due, OR dividing the larger [current] B12 dose into two sessions might help.

since the gastric bypass decreases your ability to absorb B12, and the sublingual doesn't give you enough, you're gonna have to be extra-careful [but you knew that!]

how are your folate levels, BTW? this level goes hand-in-hand with the B12, and might need a bit of attention. ALSO - i'm assuming that you're also getting B-1 injections? does the doc give you the B1 and the B12 at the same time?

My folate levels seem to be fine and I am still getting my bloodwork done every six months so the docs can keep a close eye on my levels. I seem to be fine taking the B-1 orally at this time, however it is also available as an injection if I ever have problems with absorption with that. Luckily it hasn't reached that point yet.
