I know this will be a downer paragraph but I need some help from someone who has been through it and won the battle. I am still going through the many tests that one must go through to determine where you are in this big old thing called Type II Diabetes. I have been poked and proded and drained. They have found protein in my urine as well. So as I sit here waiting for someone to tell me what exactly I need to be doing (short of the obvious no sugar few carbs) What am I supposed to be eating. I had been warned and warned that this was going to happen. I have been over weight for 15 years. But I am NOT at my largest. I also have high blood pressure so that gets mixed in there too. I guess I'm in the mad stage right now. BUT, on a positive note I have cut back on my food and removed as much sugar as I can and I have lost 15 pounds in the process. I need to loose another 120 pounds before this is all over. Does any one have any ideas for a safe and effective weight loss program. Bariatric is completely out it doesn't work. My Aunt had that done and she is right back where she started (minus about 50 pounds) I am determined to get myself off of all my medication. Right now, I am taking HBP meds, Cholesterol MEds, Asthma meds and now diabetes meds. All because I was to lazy to lose weight. I really don't know who I'm mad at; I only have myself to blame. Has anyone else ever felt this way? I guess I should try a diabetes support group. This is what is so pathetic, I know what I need to do but I'm too stupid to do it.
I guess I forgot the most important Part. I'm a newbie. I work seasonally for H & R BLock and I have 2 children a boy and a girl. I love to ride horses and scrapbook. I am very active in Girl Scouts and my husband is with Boy scouts. I love reading books by Diana Gabaldon (The Outlander Series) and I am patiently waiting for the next one to be completed. I love camping and being outdoors. My kids and I love geocaching but we don't get to do it as much as we would like to. I'm a very young 41 and my hubby works in the aviation industry.

I TOOK control and got serious about it because I HAD to if I wanted to keep living! Sounds like you are in the same situation! You said you are mad, then great be mad enough to do soemthing fro yourself! YOU CAN DO IT!! you ahve a good start with watching what you are eating good job! Start moving too, start slow 10 15 minute walks, its not going to be easy but you have to do it and there is a AWESOME support onthis board!! Good LUck!!!!!
OH!! I LOVE the OUtlander series!! very cool! Forgot to mention too, we have one other thing in commen, I was born and raised in Kansas, just moved to Texas about 2 years ago!
Wow. There's a lot going on. First things first, there are plenty of groups around 3FC that you might like to check out. There's the Dieting with Obstacles section (Diabetes support), the 100 lb club (for those who are looking to lose about or more than 100lbs), & the 40-somethings. Have a look around & make sure to post where you're comfortable!
Now then. I'm sorry you're going through all of this right now, but you're not stupid. You've just decided now that you want to change your life. I think that's very smart of you! You're angry and upset, and that's a perfectly acceptable way to be. Use it. Use it to change your life around starting now.
Since your doctors suggesting cutting sugar & lowing carbs, you may also be interested in checking out the Low Carb area under Diet Central. Plenty of people who are losing weight by lowering their carb intake.
Know that you CAN do this. We're here to help support you.
Hi!! Welcome to 3FC! I second the recommendation to check out the diabetes board and the 100lb Club. You have landed in a wonderful supportive spot. Many of us have had "aha" life-changing moments/stick over the head occurances that force us to pay attention and change our lives. It sounds like you have some great reasons to make some changes and we are here to help you.
First of all, you are not too stupid at all! Secondly, I predict you'll feel better AND come off the meds very quickly as soon as you drop even a little weight! Lastly, someone here has a signature line that reads, "I can't lose 100 pounds but I can lose 10 pounds 10 times" which has really helped me feel better about my own situation. Take this journey one step at a time and remember, you are the best wife, mother, daughter and friend your family could ever wish for! So be kind to yourself and patient too. You can do this!
Okay NUTTYMOM . . . You've taken a first very important step by coming to 3FC . . . now come on over and visit us on the DIABETES SUPPORT FORUM . . . http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=203 . . . just click on that link and you will be there.
Not only am I the Moderator in the Diabetes Support Forum, I'm also a long time Type II (almost 20 years) myself. What you've already been told about losing weight is so very, very true. Losing 60 pounds has enabled me to finally stop using Insulin and cut my numerous other meds by 1/3 to 1/2. Weight loss with Diabetes is not easy, but together we can do it, Chickie. I still have a long way to go, of course.
Has your doctor booked you an appointment with a DEC (Diabetes Education Centre) and a dietician? Very important and most insurance companies will cover the cost.
Based on reading your post, I just want to point out one thing -- sugar is no more a villanous substance than any other high Glycemic Index (GI) quick acting carbohydrate (such as white bread and potatoes). The amount of carb that any one person can handle is a very personal thing, even though we all deal with the same disease. Most important thing is to make sure to spread your carb intake fairly evenly across the day.
Hope I'll be seeing you soon over in the Diabetes corner of the 3FC world. It can really help to chat with others that really know what things you are facing and what thoughts are going through your mind.
First I want to thank you all so much for the encouragement. I will beat this thing. I'm on my way over to the 100lb club and the diebetes support board. Trust me you will all get tired of me. I also went proactive and joined up on the biggest looser thing coming up in april. I guess the only way to tackle all of this is to hit it head on and that is what I plan to do.
I think I have found a great place to start. I joined in February but didn't come back until today. Now I'm here for good. Thanks Ladies.
Pam
