Default ideal weight

How did you choose what your ideal weight should be. After looking at pictures today I think I maybe should raise my goal weight to 170 .I saw pictures where I weighed 170 and looked and felt great. I had went with 150 as my goal weight because that is what the charts say. I think after being 300lbs thats I might be completly happy and healthy at 170lbs. What do you think? I can always go lower once I get to 170.

hi
it's not only about charters! you 'll see, if you will feel great at 170, than you will change your goal...or maybe not...
it's about you and how you feel, this is just my opinion.

I am not exactly the same as I was when I weighed 145, 175 or even 225.

I am basing my current goal on small increments, and my longer term goal is to get to just under 200 pounds and then I will reevaluate.

Honestly, I looked and felt pretty good at 225 and with how much I exercise, how healthily I eat and my lifestyle at this time, 225 will be better than ever. Would I still be "over fat"? Yes. I'll be pretty darn fit though!

Realistically, my ultimate goal my be around 175 at the very lowest, but I won't know until I get there. Being at 199 will be HEAVEN to me.

I didn't have any idea what I would be like really anywhere below 200, so I didn't really set a goal weight. I sort of settled in at the mid-170s. But I have to say that even though at 5'5" I still very much qualify as "overweight" according to BMI, that my life is so immensely improved at this weight, and I am VERY happy!

I do see that I still have quite a bit of fat (and loose skin), but for the most part I am supremely happy to be active and mobile and healthy and wearing misses' sizes.

I think goal weights are very individual -- so what works for one may well not work for another. Kind of like food lifestyles, really!

My goal weight changed several times. My first goal weight was 150 - a weight I had been able to maintain for a couple of years in the early 90s. I felt good at that weight. However, when I got to 150, I was still losing weight easily and felt I would be happier, so I revised my goal weight to 135 (a good weight for my height - said the charts). I hit 140 and plateaued for months, so I figured i was done losing weight and revised my goal to 140. I happily started maintaining at 140. Imagine my surprise when I ended up losing MORE weight and ended up around 127-130 where I have remained ever since.

I think goal weights are good - but just remember they aren't written in stone and you can revise them up or down as it makes you happy and feel successful.

I have wondered about this too. I have set my goal weight at 160, which is on the higher end of what the charts say I should be at. I have no clue what 160 would look like on me; I think the last time I weighed 160 I was still into New Kids On The Block and wanted to live in the 90210 zip code My mother and some of my friends who are my height say that 160 is too low. I figure I will stop when I am happy, if that happens to be at 220 or 130 then that is fine with me.

I chose my goal weight because it is inside of the "charts" range of weights for me. But also because I cannot remember when I weight anything lower than 175 at 175 I was in a size 13 I think.....it was the end of my Junior year in high school....I met my husband in my Senior year in March.....I was in a size 16 or so at that time......I would love to be in a size 10 but all of these are just numbers for now........when I get closer to the goal I will re-evaluate how I look and feel about my body then. I really can't see myself going any lower (at this time) not that I physically couldn't I just cant invision it!

so for now its just a number.........that my arms are reaching out for........and when I get closer I will figure out if its truely the number I want to grab ahold of and keep or if I want a lower number or if it is too low for me.

for now its just a number.....

I picked 140....when I graduated high school I weighed 140...and thought I was a moose...because I was a size 10 and my friends were all 6's. I look back now at pictures and wish I could have seen what I really looked like....makes me wonder if I ever would have gotten so heavy if I had not already thought of myself as big.

I also picked 140 because it seems like a safe enough place for someone like me who is 5'5". I honestly think about this point very little...I love my WW leader's philosophy that my next goal is 5 lbs. away from where I am now..and to look at the baby steps...not try to envision the entire journey at one time.

CanDo...are you in Gainesville Florida? I am a proud UF Alumna and had many great years there.

Julee
I cant agree with you more about wishing you could have really "seen" yourself at a size 10.

I have a relative who thinks she is fat and she wears a size 12 and 5'8" and I tell her she is fine just stay active dont diet, it will only make you gain weight! I know girls these days feel like a 8 10 12 is so huge because there are a few girls that are really small and of course the whole hollywood thin thing....

I set my goal based on weight charts, however I think I could be happy with higher weight. I remember feeling pretty darn good at 215lbs. I think that being even smaller would just feel even that much better!

I would say as I get closer to my goal I will adjust it as needed. I dont think the weight charts apply to everyone. If someone is fit and heavier from muscle then its fine if they are above the charts. I would go on body fat % and the clothes size more than lbs...

Debi - I'd leave your goal as 150, but mentally take a look at yourself once you hit 170. If you like where you are then, change your goal and consider your weight loss journey becomes a maintenance one.

I wouldn't change it now. I'm kind of the same, not really sure if the 125 I picked is realistic (having never been a correct weight). So I put it in as a best case scenario, figuring that as I got closer I could adjust it.

My answer is similar to Soul Bliss's. I have no idea how I am going to feel as the pounds drop off. I will be ecstatic to be below 200. From there, I will evaluate it as I go. I will also listen to my body as it lets me know where it is most comfortable. My weight loss may slow or stop at a certain point, and i will be ok with where it takes me.

I had no idea. I thought 117 sounded soooo skinny to me and made it my "secret" goal. Only to find out that it is not doable for me at all. My body doesn't like being below 127. And I am struggling to get back there.
My first goal was to lose as much as possible and when I got into onederland to re-assess. Because I passed 200 at age 12. So then I picked 136 because that was half of my body weight lost. And I did it. And it is sustainable. And so long as I can keep below that I am a pretty happy camper. It can become a little bit of a greedy situation though. The more weight you lose the more you want to lose and the worse you feel if you can't get to an impossibly tiny goal. I mean, I sobbed when I gained weight and passed the threshold into the 140s after Christmas when in reality, 4 years ago if you said "*poof* i will now make you 140lbs" I would have cried with joy. So, go figure. Our bodies and brains are strange things.

My goal weight of 150 was sort of randomly set when I began weight loss. My body has settled in around 148-149-the last few 10 pounds were tough to lose. My body seems to like where it is now, even though technically it's above what the charts say. I think you have to consider your build-I carry alot of weight up top lol-but I'm a size 8-10 on the bottom (which seems small to me!). Also, I don't really want any more of my skin to hang. So just pay attention to how YOU look and feel. I think you'll know when it's right.

Interesting topic, because I think it's harder to pick a goal weight when you are close to or over 300 lbs. When I first started trying to lose weight, I just wanted to lose weight. I had no goal in mind other than to feel better. I had lost about 75 lbs before I decided to start posting at 3FC. Well then I wanted a ticker and to do a ticker, I needed an ending weight, so I picked 180 out of the air. It was the smallest I could actually imagine weighing, having been over 300 lbs. for several years. I'm tottering at the edge of goal, but it's been very difficult to get these last 15 lbs off and I'm not sure if 180 will be sustainable for me. I would definitely say keep the higher weight as your goal and decide when you get there.
