Red face Where do I start??

My name is genny and I just feel so overwelmed by it all. I have obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) so I seem to always feel anxious and totally out of control. I weigh 254 and am about 5'7. I am divorced and have been single for over 10 years now. In my heart I want to take control of my life and get my "groove back". I am starting a workout program march 1st, but the food thing just seems so big to get a hold of!! Its not like im new to trying to lose weight but since I obviousley have had no success in the past its hard to find hope. Any pointers, reciepes, hints or support would be a great start. Ihave never belonged to a group on line so I figured what the heck.

Hi and welcome!

You'll be glad you found this site! It's wonderful.

I feel better if I can get just one part of my life in order. That seems to make the rest seem calmer and more organised -or- makes me feel like I could be more organised.

Please remember that if there is anything we can do to help you ... all you have to do is ask.

What I believe we all find at 3fc, is a complete understanding from others about what it's like to have to lose weight. We can really give eachother the best support, because we going through the same things.

Good to see you're going to be starting an exercise program. Getting a handle on our food is important, too. Have you given thought to what type of food program you'd like to follow? Check out the Diet Central area for a list of a number of ways. You might even want to just start with a baby step in the right direction, like drinking a few glasses of water a day.

You might like to check out the Chicks In Control area, or the 100 lb club. (Or both! No need to stick to only one place ) Just have a look around the forums. And, ask if you have questions.

Best of success to you!

Welcome, Genny and good luck on your workout program. I can understand it all being overwhelming. But I believe you're at the right place. I recently joined this forum and have already received bunch of encouraging words. Motivation is a key to everything. Speaking from personal experience if I don't feel motivated it is hard for me to do anything. So make sure you keep yourself motivated. We're all here to help and support.

You might want to start with keeping a notebook with you all time and writing down everything you eat each day along with the calories associated with it. This has been helpful for me so far. I'm also working on joining the 3FC blog and writing my progress and what I'm doing to achieve my goals. Great way to keep oneself in check. And don't forget to take one day at a time Don't forget to take it slow and steady and I can totally understand it is hard sometimes.

Good Morning Genny and

I think you have already taken a very important step in your weight loss journey and that is coming HERE! This is the most fantastic support system I have even encountered.

When you're doing well everyone is so great and if you get off track and ask for help the folks here won't hesitate to and help you get back where you need to be.

Starting with exercise is a big deal and congratulations on already making that move...pardon the pun! I agree with everyone that baby steps are the way to go. Start small like drinking more water or adding more veggies/fruit. You'll be amazed at the difference just from cutting out fast food if you eat it or paying attention to your fiber and protein intakes. I think that websites like thedailyplate.com and fitday.com are fantastic resources. Start by logging EVERYTHING you eat/drink in a day for a week. At the end of the week look back and see where there might be issues that may hinder a healthier approach to food. Maybe the fat/saturated fat is way too high, perhaps you're not getting enough fiber/protein or too much sodium. I find that keeping a log really helps me to stay on track and I log everything...even my water intake and activity.

If you start by making small changes (get rid of the junk food in your house) you'll find your groove and all those little things add up. Before you know it you'll be losing weight, have more energy and look forward to getting active and eating healthy.

If you need help this is the place to ask for it. The ladies and gents on this site have enough combined experience and information to help anyone achieve their goals. You've come to the right place and I wish you luck and success on your journey!

Cheers,
Tamara

Hi Genny -

My gosh -- I really relate to your statement about feeling overwhelmed, anxious and out of control. This is the major battle I had to face when getting started with a healthy life plan. And I’m facing it again now. I’ve had a recent emotional setback and find myself struggling to refocus. Everyone one is different, so I can only share what initially helped to get started and what I’m working on right now to recommit.

Control is a big thing for me. I lose control of my eating and thoughts about food when I let other areas of my life get messy. For instance, I’m pretty bad about leaving clutter around my house. For me, clutter breeds more clutter and before you know it, my house is a mess. This makes ME feel like a mess (and overwhelmed, anxious and out of control). Same thing at work when I lose focus on my todo list and start feeling disorganized in my approach to work. When I keep these things in check, I feel more in control of myself in every way - especially with food.

Regarding food, it was easier for me to ease into healthier eating habits than try to change everything in one day. I started by removing the ‘white’ stuff from my diet meaning white bread, white rice, potatoes, etc. (Replacements included whole grain bread, quinoa, yams or butternut squash). Making this change was hard and it required re-thinking my grocery shopping habits, on-the-go lunch choices, etc. I didn’t start worrying as much about potion control until ‘whole food’ choices became more natural and a part of my routine. What ever diet or approach you’re taking, can you break it down into manageable chucks?

You can and you will find your way through this!
