Default exercise bike question??

I have an exercise bike being delivered on sat.. i have tried to figure out approx how many cals i will burn riding it.. one site i found calculated the cals by asking your weight ( cause the more ya weigh the more ya burn) which makes sense to me.. but it said for 90 mins i would burn 1300 cals.... fitday doesnt ask how much i weigh or anything.. and only has biking on a flat surface to check the cals.. but i put leisurely and flat surface and came up with 800 cals burned... are these numbers anywhere near accurate?? i hope so lol.. i used to love riding bikes... could do it for hours on end.. of course it wont be as pleasurable riding in the house lol, but my plan is to just put a movie on and ride as i watch it... im sure i wont be able to ride long at first but im hoping to work up to at least 90 mins.. the bike im getting comes with 10 diff resistance lvls.. gonna start with flat surface and hopefully reach climbing mnt everest lol... anyhow.. mainly just wanted to know if those numbers are near accurate? thanks for the help

Not sure your money situation but you can get a heart rate monitor, mine was about $85, that calculates calories burned. Wear it when you use the bike and you will have a pretty accurate count of the calories you burned each time.

I agree, get a heart rate monitor. It is the only way to actually determine how many calories you burned (it gives the best estimate although not exact).

Being new here, I'm not always confident that I have something useful to share. But I read your post and thought, "Hey, I can do some research and maybe be helpful here."

So I google the topic and spend about a half an hour sifting through all these different sites with calorie-burning calculators and charts, some of which take into consideration one's present weight, some that don't.

And I came to this conclusion: Everyone estimates it differently!

Most of the sites, though, put 90 minutes of leisure biking at somewhere between 700-900 calories burned.

Did your exercise bike happen to come with a heart monitor strap (that goes around your chest?) My elliptical has one and it functions the same way a heart rate monitor would.

When I did a heart pounding elliptical workout in the gym for 30 minutes, the ellipticals at the gym would say I burned 600 calories. I do the same heart pounding workout on my elliptical at home using my heart monitor strap, the elliptical tells me I've burned 250 calories.

Hi remydey,

I just got a recumbent New Balance 6100 two weeks ago and LOVE it! Like you, I used to love to ride a bike and this one is so easy on my back. I ride for 30 minutes and burn approximately 400 calories. The faster you move your legs, of course, the more calories that you burn. Two weeks ago I was burning about 300 calories but I noticed last night that it was almost 400. 90minutes seems like a long time to me to start with. The important thing is to get your heart rate up. Take it slow and ease into it. Hope that you enjoy your bike as much as I'm enjoying mine!

I have found using Cardio Coach cds make the bike rides much more fun! They are guided audio workouts, and they instruct you when to increase your speed/resistance. Coach Sean is very motivating.

You can find out more at www.cardiocoach.com

I'm not affiliated with him or anything-I have just found that the cds make the time fly by on my bike. The volume one workout is thirty minutes, and he has them up to volume seven. They get progressively more difficult and longer with each volume.

Have fun!
