Default Is there a food you refuse to give up?

I have to say, after being on numerous go rounds with dieting, there are a couple of foods that can not be replaced as far as I'm concerned. I have yet to find a mayonnaise that even comes close to tasting good, so I stick with the mayo of my childhood, Hellmann's, I just use less. I also have yet to find a palatable salad dressing that does not replace low-fat with high sugar. I hate sweet in my food. I've tried the 2-calorie which is not bad, but after a while it gets sooooooo boring! Weight Watchers used to make a russian dressing in a jar years ago and I've not seen it around. That was quite tasty as I recall. I'm not a big salad dressing fan anyway, so I just use what tastes good and just a very little at that. Anyone have good results or suggestions for alternatives or are there foods you wont give up, too!

Good question! I keep reading/hearing that tastes change with time, but for right now, I cannot give up butter. I can get by on 2 tablespoons a day, which is about half my prior consumption. I don't bake, but I saute with butter and put it on bread.

Other things I thought were "must haves" -- awful things, like sodas and candy -- I've been able to give up, but I cling to butter.

Yeah, all of them. I refuse to give up anything I love. When I sat down and decided how I was going to handle weight loss for good this time. I wrote a list of what I was willing to change and what I wasn't. For once being completely honest about what I was willing to do. The first thing on that list was not to give up any of my favorite foods. I do use less salt, I change some things here or there if it truly won't affect taste. I might buy different brands of stuff but I'm not giving up anything. Food is a wonderful and fun part of my life, and I don't want to give up stuff I like.

Ice Cream. There's just no way I could live without ever eating it again.

I haven't given up any foods. I eat real foods, and that means real butter, real cheese, real sugar, etc. I eat mostly healthy, but there is nothing I can't have if I want it and can fit it into my daily calorie limit.

Chocolate and diet coke here! I don't drink much diet coke but I love it. And I could never give up chocolate.

On the one hand, I'm not sure there's anything I've given up entirely, but on the other hand, there are tons of foods I eat very very rarely. I have had real ice cream twice in the past year, for example. But there are lots of lovely foods I have regularly... like dark chocolate. I don't think it would be possible for me to have lost weight without making changes and not always eating what I think I want to eat.

The great part is that my substitute foods I love! For example, we make tacos still, but use turkey instead of ground beef, low fat cheese and lf sour cream. I think they're great!

I'm one who can actually settle for substitutes. I use light dressing, no mayo, butter substitutes, etc. I'm pretty flexible..but the one thing that I refuse to give up completely is my Pumpkin Spice Fraps from Starbucks. There is no way that anything could be a substitution for that. So I just use my extra flex points for the week to have one...just one a week.

What I refuse to give up has changed dramatically from day one to today. Today I couldn't give up oatmeal or peanut butter. And I love chicken. I don't think I could give up chicken (well maybe if I could substitute turkey I could).

Three years ago, the only time I ate oatmeal or peanut butter was when I made oatmeal drop cookies. Otherwise I hadn't had oatmeal or peanut butter for ages.

I haven't given up anything -- I still eat everything I enjoy, just on a much more infrequent basis. Instead of eating chocolate every day, I'll eat it once a week. And the pints (well used to be a gallon or two a week) of premium ice cream -- maybe two or three times a year. I went to the Cheesecake Factory last week and had a burger, fries, and a piece of cheesecake. Do I have indulge like that every time I go to a restuarant? No, I usually have a salad. But sometimes, I just want a burger.

BUTTER.... I am not swapping my butter for that low fat water looking spread, it makes toast soggy! I figure I am fine with butter just use less and instead of 5 slices of toast I will have two!

To answer your question - I have given up nothing specifically. I'm watching my portions and that's about it. Probably the one thing I won't buy until I can be sure I won't eat it all is ice cream.

I might be able to help on the salad dressing. I've been making my own, using water thickened with cornstarch for the oil, and splenda (to taste) for the sugar. I tend to cut down the sweetener in most dressings. You also need to adjust the spices, especially the hot ones. I'll look out (and post later) one I've been making that's probably close to a russian dressing which uses condensed tomato soup as a base.

If anyone is interested, I posted a recipe for Southern French Dressing:

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131377

It's a low-cal version of one I saw elsewhere. It uses a sweetener for the sugar, and an oil substitute for the oil (water thickened with cornstarch). 2 Tbsp comes out to 15 calories.

Anne that dressing looks really good, already printed it out to have a go! I've been having so much fun trying out recipes I find online that other people share! This past couple of months or so my tastebuds have come alive!
