I'm 4 months into my 6 months of nutrition classes necessary before I can be considered for WLS. I've decided I would like the RNY Gastric Bypass. I understand I am not allowed to drink soda EVER. I'm trying to give it up now but I am seriously addicted. It's not the caffeine. I've pretty much replaced it with tea so I'm not suffering from the horrible headaches but I really really miss soda.
What was the hardest thing you had to give up? Were you successful?
I was a diet pepsi feind! Thought I couldn't do without it but when I was told that once I have surgery I couldn't drink it, I pushed myself hard and quit. Recently, I have been "letting go" of foods and drinks I like so I had a diet for letting go purposes...I hated it! It was salty and gross. I couldn't believe it! I would rather have very cold water with a bit of juice in it then a soda...go figure!
Also after having it, I was a thristy for hours and the caffine feeling was less pleasent then coffee. Just not worth it.
Be patient with yourself and know you are worth so much more then a soda...it will all fall into place.
So have you both had the surgery or are you just trying to quit to be healthier? At least you both are drinking diet. I drink regular. A LOT of it!! I had a about 4 oz of it last night but other than that I've been drinking tea with a tiny bit of splenda in it. I know it's crazy for something like this to have me in it's grips but I just don't see how I'm going to live without it
Missangelaks how long had it been since you quit? I have heard from other people that in time it will taste gross. I just wonder how long it takes....
I had surgery (lapband) and giving up the soda was easier than I thought. Just the thought of it hurting was enough for me. On occasion if I want a soda, I will shake it untill its flat (or leave it open overnight) and I'll drink it like that, but that is very very rare. I drink diet iced tea or unsweetened iced tea, flavored water or plain.
I didn't try to really give up anything before surgery. I drank a lot of Diet Pepsi. After the surgery (for a few weeks), its a struggle to get in what you need for protein, so one doesn't have much of a craving for foods or drinks. I am now hooked on SF Iced Tea mixes in Peach, Lemon or Raspberry flavors. I don't even think that pop looks good. Your tastes will change after surgery.
My surgery is scheduled for Feb 4th 2008 but I gave up pepsi when I was doing the 6 month dr. supervised diet for the ins. company. It was hard at first but knowing how much I wanted this surgery to be successful, I stuck too it. It was hard to change my lifestyle knowing I was just hoping to have the surgery...but I was determined. I have to say, It was as hard as quitting smoking!
though as hard to quit as smoking, because I know now it tastes like crap...makes me more dehydrated...makes it easier to handle the cravings for it. I really do crave bottled water with a little juice in it...even FUSE is too sweet now and I will water it down! Yes, things are changing when I thought they never would. There's hope...always.
