Lorelei... like you, I typically didn't exercise in the past... and well... you can see the results. However, this time I am, and I have found that working out not only helps my heart but it helps keep me on track with my eating... because I sure as heck don't want to muck up dinner after I've already put time and effort into a workout.
Also, I saw a special report on obesity in America on 20/20 earlier this year. It was fascinating... mainly because it revealed something new to me. Of course, we all know the depressing figures on the number of those who lose weight and gain it all back. Those figures were the same as always (ugh!). However, something new was pointed out... of the people who lost weight AND kept it off there was one thing they all had in common, without exception... it wasn't the way in which they lost weight, because they all had used different weight-loss methods (indeed, the study pointed out it didn't seem to matter how they lost the weight)... nope, the common thread running through the long-term success stories was... drumroll please... regular exercise. And they said it didn't have to be an enormous amount of regular exercise... just 30 minutes, 5 or more times a week (for example, one man just walked 1 mile a day, fives times a week and still kept the weight off for more than 15 years). That was an eye opener for me. I always knew people could lose weight without exercising, but until then I didn't realize how crucial exercise could be in keeping it off.
(And you better believe, if this girl is going to lose 100 pounds, she sure as heck doesn't want to battle those same 100 pounds again.)
Anyway, this time I'm incorporating exercise and so far, so good.
