Default hello again

hello again. i signed up here back in febuary and had every intention of sticking with it, but i just didn’t. but i am back and hopefully this time will do it. i had my first appt. with the bariatric surgon last week. i have chosen to try the lap band.

i am now up to 422lbs. its hard for me to even type that. it’s like saying it outloud...it makes it more real i guess somehow. though its real everytime i pass a mirror, i guess admiting to others my actual weight is like admiting what a weak person i am.that i let it get this bad. i hate my self sometimes for letting it get this bad.

anyway, the surgon said he would prefer i have the gastric bypass because i woulod loose more. with g.b. i would go down to about 180lbs. with the l.b. he says about 250lbs.

the thing is, i have 2 small kids. sammi is 2 and 1/2, and tyler is 18mo. the l.b. is alot less risky. he said so himself. but continued to try to persude me in the other direction. even after telling the reasons for my choice.

i would be thrilled to get down to 250. that is almost 200 lbs. lost! though acording to the doctors i would still be severly obese. 250 would be a **** of an accomplishment to me, i would be happy with it,so why doesn’t he just respect my decision?

please give me your opinions.

Don't think that you are weak. Don't make yourself out to be the villian. Sometimes we all need a little help. I understand about writing (or saying) your real weight. Sometimes, it's almost as hard for me to tell someone how much I've lost.
Listen to your doctor, you are paying for his advice - but also, listen to yourself (which seems like what you are doing). Between the two of you, you'll come to some conclusion. But if it really seems like he is not listening to you, you might decide to find another doctor.
I haven't heard that people with the lap band lose less than with the bypass. I have heard that they lose more slowly, but at 5 years out, they have lost as much as those with g.p.
Do research on your own - see what you can find out. The ladies (and few gentlemen) here are a great resourse. Use them.
Good luck!

In my opinion, I would do the bariatric surgery. Lapband doesn't last as long, needs adjustments, and you don't lose as much. I had RNY, its less evasive now days with laproscopic surgery.

Be sure to get all the information you can , and I would suggest that you get a second opinion for this very important step. Remember it is not a magic pill, you can regain , if you don't follow your doctor's advice after surgery, some have, either they didn't follow doctor's advice or the doctor was lax in giving them proper advice .

Default Listen to yourself

You have to listen to yourself and do what you are comfortable with. There are a few in my family who want me to do the lap band and not the RNY. But I know the RNY is what I want. The laperscopic procedure is so minimally invasive. I have heard that people who have the band are more likely to regain their weight.

You are not weak or bad. You are in the same boat with alot of us. I got up to 316 lbs before I finally had enough. I would not even admit to anyone that I had gotten up that far. You will find a lot of strong shoulders hear that will listen and give great support and advice.

In the end, do your homework and listen to what your inside voice tells you!! It is usually right!

In my opinion, you know what you want and can do successfully. I thought I was going to get a lap-band, but went for the new RNY because I needed to lose weight fast in order to have my knee surgery and I'm not getting any younger. The choice is yours and you know your circumstances surrounding you, like your children, etc. I'm just proud for you to have made a decision to change your lifestyle if that is what bothers you the most. We'll all be pulling for you, whatever you decide.

Blessings.

sweet - there are many many reasons that people choose one surgery over another. the numbers your doc cited are AVERAGES, and YOUR success depends only on YOU. it is indeed possible to lose large amounts of weight with the lapband, but ya gotta make sure that you get regular fills, and eat properly, and exercise, and so on.

you're not weak. honest!
