I would say go to your doc quick for advice. No, that is not good for anyone.

Unless you are under a doctor's care on a medically supervised diet, this would NOT be good for you. If you are a calorie counter, please read the stickies in the calorie counter forum. Fitday (pc version) has an excellent weight goal setup that will help you calculate the right number of calories that you should eat each day. But ultimately, you should talk to your doctor about how you can lose weight safely.

500-1000 a day is a starvation diet! Unhealthy and not good for long term weight loss, either. You can lose weight effectively, and become/stay healthy on far, far more calories than that. Eating so few calories will do you more harm than good in the long run.

I agree with PP's, unless you're under medical supervision (like weekly checkup's at a minimum), then it's my understanding you really shouldn't go under 1,200 calories per day.

Mmm no, I think it´s not healthy at all, unless your dr put you in that diet because of specific reasons (a surgery or something special) but otherwise it´s not healthy!

I´ve tried it, you really feel bad, tired and with nausea and give up in a few days/weeks, the most important thing (for me at least) is to keep the weight off in a healthy way and forever, this extremely low cal diets will make you lose fast but I assure you in a few months or years you´ll be struggling with weight again and again.. and a very important thing is that you´re screwing your metabolism, you´re getting into "war time mode" so your body will get everything he can, pick up every calorie and nutrient so if you eat anything more you´ll gain the weight inmediatly!

I started my 1200 cal plan last week after many attempts to go on 600 cals diets. Actually I did lose weight many times but it came back, and I don´t want that again, so in my humble opinion go with a safe healthy plan, yes, it will take longer but it´s SO SO SO much better. I´ve been there, done that and it´s really not good!

I would say it's not good for you. With less than 1000 calories a day, you're bound to miss needed nutrients no matter your efforts to eat healthy otherwise, just because the quantity isn't enough. (Normally, the minimum should be 1200--and very likely even more if you're not close to your goal weight, so that you're left with a margin to toy with calories later on, for instance to break a plateau.)

Yep--I don't think you'll find anyone here who thinks that's a good idea. You can become very ill with so few calories.

Binging and overeating abuses our bodies. Starvation diets abuse our bodies. Eating healthy food in reasonable portions and exercising is good for our bodies. Consuming such minimal calories is probably not the way to go. Redefining food's role in your life.....as something to be used for health rather than comfort/control/loss of control.....that will be more effective.

Be good to your body and your body will be good to you.

Absolutely not. Your body will start using your muscles for fuel. Please read the stickies and educate yourself on what is a good eating plan for you. Talk to your doctor too. He or she can help you or recommend a nutritionist to help you if you need help planning a good way of eating. Your body needs a minimum amount of calories just to function. 500 calories is NOT it. This is called BMR (basal metabolic rate). You can find BMR calculators online to give you an idea, based on your height and weight as to what that will be for you. Of course, it's better to talk to your doctor though.

Starving yourself is not the way to lose weight. If you want to count calories, talk to your doctor or a nutritionist, find out what you need to function for a healthy life, then ask them how to lose the weight based on that.

It is a science unto itself, but it isn't that hard, once you understand it. The stickies have lots of info. Read those, ok? Talk to your doctor. But, please, don't starve yourself.

The only time I am limited to such a low amount of calories is the day I'm prepping for a colonoscopy. That is 1 day several years apart.

Everyone here is right. Oh, you'll lose weight but when you start eating again all of that weight and an entire new neighborhood of pounds will move back onto your body.

definitely not, and you probably won't lose weight, you'll go into starvation mode, i.e put on weight if anything.
