I have never been much of a straw sipper...but I do have diet pop. Maybe one half a glass a day. I am over a year out so it doesn't really bother my pouch much.
I still stay away from anything carbonated (18 months out). I figure I have broken a bad habit, why would I want to start again -- same thing with refined sugar foods (cookies, cake, etc.) Now tell me I need to give up my peach or lemon iced tea or coffee & you would have a fight on your hands.
Straws -- I use them and always did (even though I was told not to). I found that I am able to take small sips with a straw better. I also get less air with a straw. I am careful not to drink to the bottom of the glass with a straw, however, as that is nothing but air then. Gulping the air (bubbles) hurts.
Thanks, guys.
I actually can take smaller sips with a straw, I wont gulp that way. Plus, I have dental work that I want to keep in tact, and straws help me do that!!!!
I can *live* without the diet coke, but man, I think I am going to have to break that rule. I am just trying to do my "research" to make sure I wont actually damage anything.....I asked my surgical team, and I got vague answers about too much air, and forming bad habits, since drinking from a straw causes you to drink alot (not true for me) and could cause you to eat more.....I see all of that as bull.....
thanks!!!
Thank goodness I am not a straw person (except maybe a milkshake now and then). As for soda, I had a taste of it yesterday, the first time in six months. Can you say EWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!? The stuff was totally BITTER! I think I am staying right where I am with the tea, Crystal Light, and water!
hmmm, big girl. of all the things that we have to consider when making the choice, gotta tell ya honestly that not drinking through a straw and giving up soda weren't major big deals to me. life is different after surgery - and things that you think might be a big deal just aren't, and things you thought would be easy trip you up over and over and over again.
soooo, as Kier said, it's ultimately up to you. but there's NOTHING like the pain of soda bubbles in a surgeried tummy!!!! not even the post-op pain hurt that much!!!
Oh I didnt mean the soda....I meant the straw...thats what rule I was going to break!!!!
I can live without soda......but the straw part bugs me.since I see no real important reason not to.......
I finally began drinking with a straw when I make my protein drink. It hasn't bothered me so far, but I did wait a couple of months. Still haven't tried any cola's but think I'll pass on that one. That's one habit I'd like to not get into again.
OMG!! I have to give up my Dt. Mt Dew!!!! That is (almost) a deal breaker for me!
Just kidding, but it is going to be very very hard to not have it anymore. I have started cutting back, but I just drink more coffee now. Guess I had better learn to live without it before I get my surgery.
PLEASE
Ask your dentist about drinking out of a staw if what you are haveing has any sugar in it. The dentist told me the pop was ok the straw was a no no.
