Default Sesame Seeds Are The Death Of You!!!

Okay, so last night I hosted a benefit "Take Your Dog to Dinner". (www.takeyourdogtodinner.com) It was initially to be held on Monday night of last week, but it was rained out. Well, the gal running the event did an AWFUL job letting people know there was a rain date. So, when I once had 20 dogs reserved for the week before, only 3 showed last night at the restaurant I was hosting.

THREE.

I sat on that patio for 4 1/2 hours of a great restaurant with nothing to do but eat.

So I ate.

I ate corn tortilla's and salsa.
I ate the tuna dish with swiss chard and some kind of fancy rice.
I ORDERED THE TRES LECHES CAKE.

With all of this, I counted just over 1800 calories. NOT GREAT because I'm trying to stick to 1200 calories a day. Even with the cake! Yay!

But, for the **** of it, I remembered to put in the 1/2 cup of sesame seeds on my tuna filet. Because, I'm telling you, that tuna was COVERED in sesame seeds.

423 calories. OMG.

Please, please, please, please, if you remember nothing else from me. Remember to not eat sesame seeds. They are not worth the calories, in my opinion.

What a terrible night last night. FitDay is telling me I actually ate more calories than I consumed. I feel AWFUL about myself. I knew I was going to regret this last night, but I had no idea I would regret it this much.

I pray this was my learning experience and I'll never do it again.

Oh, I am sorry you are disappointed!

1/2 a cup is a LOT of sesame seeds! Are you SURE it was 1/2 a cup?

I eat unhulled sesame seeds as they are an excellent source of calcium, have iron as well as fiber and are rich in good fats. I daresay the tres leches cake probably had more calories with less nutritional benefits?

I agree with SoulBliss. Even 1/2 cup of sesame seeds (and it would be VERY hard to get that much to stick to your tuna filet, I think...maybe you overestimated how much actually ended up on the filet?) would be MUCH better than Tres Leche cake or Tortillas and salsa for you in the long run. Nuts are packed with calories, yes--but also packed with good fats, fiber and other nutrients. Nuts are WAY worth the calories

Also, just as an aside, I notice you're 5'10" and trying to stick with 1200 calories a day? That's really low... I would be careful about doing that for an extended period of time.

Well, I already know the tres leches cake was bad for me. Believe me, I knew last night that I was having a bad calorie night. The sesame seeds were just an extra poke at me for an already bad night.

And, yeah, I still think it was 1/2 cup. There wasn't one tiny micromilimeter of that tuna that I could see. It was covered, front back and sides, in those stupid seeds.

I'm between 5'9" & 5'10", but not to worry, I'm actually seeing a diet coach so this eating is all being monitored by a professional.

And, I'd have to say, nutritionally I'm doing fine. I also had a luna bar and a vita top yesterday morning. So, I'm packing the minerals & vitamins in. And, again, I realize the cake was a no no. I was already on to myself for that one.

I think unless the tuna fillet was two feet long, and covered on all 6 sides with sesame seeds 1/2" thick, I think your half a cup estimation is still off.
I have used sesame seeds, bread crumbs, cracked peppercorns, and other small coating seasonings and they go a very long way. One tablespoon of sesame seeds will very generously cover a chicken breast on one side (no chicken showing), and I don't know how you could choke down 1/2 cup of them, as they're quite dry.

But even if you're right, you packed in a lot of nutrition for those calories. A half cup of sesame seeds has the calcium of three glasses of milk (270 calories if skim) a fair amount of protein, tons of fiber, and hosts of vitamins and minerals (see link).

The sesame seeds may actually have been the most nutritious part of your day.

I suppose I'm being a bit senstive because I feel somewhat attacked.

I REALIZE my meal was not the best. What I am pointing out is how shocked I am with the calories in those little things.

And, I will concede that perhaps I overestimated. For my part, I'm going to go home and measure out a half cup of sesame seeds and see what I get from it.

With all of that said, I very very much believe in nutrition. But please keep in mind that you can eat 5,000 calories of completely nutritious foods and you will gain weight. THIS is a weight loss board. If someone is watching their WEIGHT as well as nutrition, as I am, they may be shocked, as I was, to know that there are so many calories in those little things.

Or, perhaps, I'm the only person in the world that had no clue as to how many calories there are in those things.

Sure, I put a bit of hardcore emphasis and dramatic flare to this thread. I thought I'd throw in some entertainment value. But, at the end of the day, those suckers have a ton of calories and I, for one, will remember that when looking at a sesame seed bun or a sesame seed bagel. I just don't think they taste good enough for those extra calories. Especially when I'm getting my nutrition from other things.

Regardless, I UNDERSTAND I over did it on the calories with thigns FAR BEYOND those seeds. I wouldn't mind some "chin up" comments as far as that instead of being poked further into my hole for what I did.

Just merely pointing out how full of calories they are. That's it.

I totally see where you're coming from. It's like insult to injury, right?

Like when you find out that low cal salad dressing only stays low cal if you don't drench your salad in it. Or how truly small 1/3 cup of dried cranberries are (hey, it's fruit, right). And that something as unnoticeable and seemingly unimportant like sesame seeds can have that many calories.

The nutrition in sesame seeds isn't the point. You expected the cake to be bad for you. You just didn't see it coming from some little sesame seed!

Haha, exactly!

You're right. Dried cranberries threw me for a loop one time, too! I had this great recipe for cranberry vinegrette chicken and I thought I would used dried instead of fresh. Big difference!!

Another one that will throw you is the Cooking Light magazines. Sure it's light if you eat 1/4 cup which is the service size!

I am sorry that you feel "poked" into a hole over what was intended as support! I really thought I was being supportive by expressing that I was sorry that you were disappointed in your choices for the day and then pointing out how nutritious sesame seeds are. I think everyone else meant the same. Here's another for you, Sweetie!

I know that if your "Diet Coach" is a certified nutritionist or registered dietitian they will point out the benefits of the meal you ate for you, as it was really quite nutritious (except for the treat that shall not be named ) albeit high in calories (as nearly all restaurant food is).

Side note: Has anyone told you that you look like a (more relaxed, naturally beautiful) Kelly Ripa?

You're right. There is a bright side to the seeds that at least they are the good for you calories. My diet coach told me not to feel bad because sometimes your body needs a jolt and by having those extra calories perhaps my body will stop storing them. I've only been losing 1 lb a week.

Kelly Rippa? Awwwww. Thank you.

Well, now I feel better.

What other foods or things are shockers like:

sesame seeds
dried cranberries
cooking light magazine

Anyone have something to add?

I don't think anyone was poking you, or being unsupportive. This is a subject that comes up fairly frequently here, when people don't get the response they're looking for, and I think worth pointing out.

Disagreement isn't lack of support. It's just an alternative viewpoint and opinion. Your point may have been unexpected calories (and we all can relate to that), but your statement that sesame seeds aren't worth the calories was one that some of us disagreed with, and responded to. It may not have been your main point, but people are going to respond to what speaks to them, and are not always going to give the response you're looking for (No mind readers here). It may seem ridiculous, but if you want (or don't want) a certain response, you have to be more specific in asking for what you want. Otherwise, you have to expect that people will respond based on their experience, and it might be very different than you intended.

yeah i will be staying away from those bad boys! in all liklihood you did eat a lot less than you are estimating (maybe a tablespoon?) but its good to overestimate, it keeps us honest.

just focus on the long term (its ok if cals eaten exeeds cals burned on ONE day - you just need the total amount for the total days to be under the cals eaten. you know?

on the bright side there is lots of literature outthere that says shaking up your diet routine and actually eating more cals on a given day will help your body not plateau and you will lose more weight than if you divided up all the cals equally per day.

so ie one day 1,000, the next day 1,400, the next 1,200, the next 1,000, the next 1,400, the next 1,200 etc

youre still averaging 1,200 but youre shaking it up!

last of all dont beat yourself up for one "off" day. you are still doing great and can lose that weight!

Yes Margarine, and Mayo, I mean I never counted calories before, so I was in shock to see that Margarine had so many calories, hummm what else, Starbucks cakes, I mean come on 400 calories, sort of obvious I know, but I didn't think it was that bad.
My lunch every day was BLT on Greek toast (with sesame seeds on the crust of the toast--I never even thought to count those calories too!... LOL) and french fries,
I need help finding a replacement meal for that.
Anyway the other night I had a steak instead and A1 sauce and a baked potato with margarine, is that better, (that was for a dinner)
