Default Hello - Just Diagnosed with IR

After many years of doctor visits and being told I'm lazy if I'm not losing weight, I was just diagnosed with IR. I had never even heard of it. I always thought I had PCOS (ovarian cysts, inability to lose weight, bad periods) but my last doctor said I was fine. I lost my periods a couple of years ago and my doctor said that was also fine. I should have known better.....

Skip forward a couple of years (and many attempts to lose weight), and I found a new GYN. She tested me for all kinds of things and found that I'm in menopause - in my very early 40s! She put me on HRT and told me it would be very hard to lose weight - I should consider surgery. She did recommend a new "regular" doctor, who I went to see a couple of weeks ago.

My new doctor said that she wanted to run a few more tests and if she didn't find anything, then I should look at having lap-band surgery. But, she called a few days later and said I have IR. She put me on Metformin, starting with 500mg twice a day for a week, then up to 100mg twice a day. Last Monday was when I started, and I was nauseous most of the week. I couldn't even go to the gym (I'm pretty religious about my exercising). By Friday I was much better and was able to work out. I was definitely less hungry and the horrible carb cravings were GONE!

Today I moved up to the larger dose. So far, so good. I had oatmeal (with added protein powder and almonds) for breakfast, so I think that helped. I did lose 6 pounds last week. I'm following the low glycemic diet from ediets.com - somewhat loosely, but it gives me lots of ideas.

Anyway, I'm very happy to have found all of you - I didn't know anything about IR and, although I really glad for a diagnosis after all this time, it's an unusual thing to have that seems to be a lot of work to control.

So, that's my story. I'll be around trying to lose weight.....

Kim

Thanks! I've been pretty sick the last two days - not sure what foods trigger it - but hopefully I'll get adjusted quickly. Has anyone else figured out what foods to avoid with Metformin? I know about sweets, but I haven't eaten those.

Thanks
Kim

Kim, I had bad luck with Metformin. It seemed like it didn't matter what I ate, i stayed sick!! Each meal would follow a loong trip to the bathroom. It didn't work for me but maybe it will work for you? I'm now on meridia and so far so good. No major side effects, just not happy about the price! None of my insurance carriers will pay for it
