Hello - Just Diagnosed with IR
After many years of doctor visits and being told I'm lazy if I'm not losing weight, I was just diagnosed with IR. I had never even heard of it. I always thought I had PCOS (ovarian cysts, inability to lose weight, bad periods) but my last doctor said I was fine. I lost my periods a couple of years ago and my doctor said that was also fine. I should have known better.....
Skip forward a couple of years (and many attempts to lose weight), and I found a new GYN. She tested me for all kinds of things and found that I'm in menopause - in my very early 40s! She put me on HRT and told me it would be very hard to lose weight - I should consider surgery. She did recommend a new "regular" doctor, who I went to see a couple of weeks ago.
My new doctor said that she wanted to run a few more tests and if she didn't find anything, then I should look at having lap-band surgery. But, she called a few days later and said I have IR. She put me on Metformin, starting with 500mg twice a day for a week, then up to 100mg twice a day. Last Monday was when I started, and I was nauseous most of the week. I couldn't even go to the gym (I'm pretty religious about my exercising). By Friday I was much better and was able to work out. I was definitely less hungry and the horrible carb cravings were GONE!
Today I moved up to the larger dose. So far, so good. I had oatmeal (with added protein powder and almonds) for breakfast, so I think that helped. I did lose 6 pounds last week. I'm following the low glycemic diet from ediets.com - somewhat loosely, but it gives me lots of ideas.
Anyway, I'm very happy to have found all of you - I didn't know anything about IR and, although I really glad for a diagnosis after all this time, it's an unusual thing to have that seems to be a lot of work to control.
So, that's my story. I'll be around trying to lose weight.....
