Default Whens the best time to walk?

Hi, I'm new at this and I joined that Presidents Fitness group.

But I was wondering when is the best time to start walking in the day?
I Have a 20month old son i will be taking with me.
How long should I walk for? I'm just starting out and thought i would start with walking.
Also what are some good exercises to do at home when i can't get out to walk?

It doesn't really matter when just that you DO it and consistently. When it's hot out I prefer to walk in the morning or when it starts to get dark because it is cooler. You also want to think about safety and your surroundings at different times of day.

The key is to start off slow not over do it. Later, you'll get a better calorie burn if you walk as brisk as your current fitness level allows. I started off doing maybe a mile or two slow... 2.5 mph and worked upto 4 miles at 3.75 or so mph...

Edit to add: Working out at home is fairly easy if you have a DVD player and a few good DVDs.

Since I had children, this is not true for me at all.

I had a doctor who told me that her weight loss was significantly better when she exercised in the morning. This always has been true for me too. However, my babies have been 5 AM-7 AM constant nursers, so I have not been able to hit that goal in a while.

By next spring I hope to be back on the morning plan. For me, it made a mountain of difference.

LISA ~If you have no idea how far to go just make sure it isn't too far...ya gotta come back! Take it easy at first and just build on it. There is a lady in another thread, well she used to be there, anyway when she started walking she decided to do it at the rec center. The first day she couldn't make it to the door from the parking lot. She continued to build on that until she was able to do 4 laps around the pool...one mile, which was great for her with all her difficulties. You can do this! Good luck!

Do you have a pedometer? If you can just log in 10,000 steps per day you're considered active.

My law firm recently had a walking challenge and many of us found super creative ways to get our steps in. We walked up and down the elevator bank waiting for the elevator. (We work on the 39th floor.) When we were only going up a few flights, we walked it. During our lunch hour we walked to the lake and back. We walked to the Metra train instead of taking a bus. We delivered our mail by hand instead of using the mailroom. And think you can apply this to your home life.

I remember walking to Navy Pier from my house one day. It was 18,000 steps for the day. The next more I awoke to sore legs and all I did was walk!!!!

The Jurys still kinda out on that morning thing I've heard conficiting advice, but yeah if your one of those people who benefit from the mood boost exercise gives it makes more sense to do it in the morning.

But seriously whenever you can get it is the best time. If you end up saying to yourself oh well it's not morning anymore now I have to wait until tomorrow what good will that do? Do what you can when you can don't worry about the "rules"
