Default How to find out if your a compulsive eater?

I have been reading posts here and some stickys and was just curious...how do you know if you are a compulsive eater? I fit in many of the categories or "signs" of being one....and that would explain a LOT in my life....how do I find out?

I'm not a psychologist etc, but I'm very au fait with Compulsive Overeating.

I'd describe myself as a Food Addict.

I'd say if its a YES to most of the following, yes, you are. Google for the criteria as well and youll come across the medical criteria/guidelines. But, informally:

1 . Do you eat more than most people seem to?
2 . Do you regularly consume food when you ARN'T hungry?
3 . Do you keep how much you eat/what you eat secret?
4 . Is how much you eat a source of shame/distress to you?
5 . Are you overweight?
6 . Do you spend a lot of time thinking about food?

You don't have to be overweight to be a compulsive overeater of course (I'm not, and I am, if that makes sense!) but often people are.

I think I am...honestly. I tend to obsess about food until I eat some...like if I start thinking about a treat...man my brain goes to overload until I get something sweet..I can "talk myself out of it" but then I end up eating something in the end.

I think about food most of the time
I definately eat when I am not "truely" hungry
I am about 20lbs overweight...which isnt as bad as it used to be, but considering I was at goal weight in March of this year that is BAD!
I do like to eat when NO ONE is around, and I DO hide food a lot, like eat it in the kitchen before I go to where everyone else is....
I dont OVER EAT, but I will consume a lot of food (or calories) in a period of time (kinda a nibbler)

I think I am. I often wish I could be hypnotized to NOT think about food. What can I do?

Well...hypnotherapy IS an option for relaxation/focus, but usually its a case of...

a) figuring out WHY you compulsively eat
b) figuring out ways to replace the role of food, eg if you eat out of boredom, how can you tackle boredom in other NON food ways?
c) if its emotional, eg you are afraid to be slim because of selfhate, or difficulty with societal issues and the pressure to be thin, these issues need to be acknowledged and/or dealt with, so again, you don't have to "resort" to food as an anaesthetic...this may require self analysis/professional help

In my situation, I think I've figured out why I compulsively overeat and I'm working on those issues. However, the behaviour has become so automatic. The first step in stopping the process is to stop and think about what you're feeling and why you want to binge. I think my behaviour has become a habit - I'll be in the grocery store loading up and taking stuff home way before it occurs to me to think about why I want to do this.

Can it sometimes be as simple as liking food?

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you are-I don't usually outright binge, but I'm about 20 pounds overweight and I'll "nibble" as if spreading out the calories negates them or something.
