Does anyone remember being given Tylenol III in the hospital after your baby was born? I remember getting percocet after dd and I cant remember what after ds. I think it was TIII. I just go prescribed t3 for pain and the doc told me I had to quit nursing, but I think I was given it when he was born as one of the "safer" narcotics.
T3 is codeine like vicodin, which is safe for breastfeeding. Dr. Hale's website says it's an L2, meaning generally safe - I believe. Your pediatrician or lactations consultant should have his book (medications and mother's milk) to look it up.
I am actually dropping weight pretty quickly post-partum and nursing. I don't have a whole lot of appetite, but that may be the metformin I am on for my Type 2 diabetes. Whatever it is, it's working and my milk supply doesn't seem to be impaired!
My biggest challenge is going back to work Monday since baby girl Kate just LOVES to nurse. She takes a bottle when she's hungry enough, but I think it will be a tough adjustment for her. She's starting to use a pacifier more, so hopefully that will help.

I was given TIII in the hospital (alternating dosing with Motrin I believe). I only took 1 or 2 doses of the TIII and requested only Motrin because that seemed to be more effective on my pain. The TIII didn't seem to make a difference, so I didn't want to take it.
GL Kim with your transition back to work.
Ugh. I went to my OB/GYN today for my annual exam. She was impressed that I was "down" to my pre-pg weight. The truth is that I'm actually back "up" to my pre-pg weight. I gained back the extra 10 lbs I lost. It's so hard to stick with it, but tomorrow is a new day. I got a bunch of yummy veggies from my MIL's farm this weekend, so that should help get me started. I've also tried to increase my activity (my 20-month-old DD helps me in that department!) So it's back to calorie counting and regular exercise, again. My SIL has lost 80+ lbs, so it's nice to have her around for motivation and support. She looks great! DS is doing great with nursing. I think he has started teething already. He drools a lot and his gums seem to bother him. I'm not looking forward to the teeth!
Spillthebeans - I agree with Ennay... after my first pregnancy I trusted the adage 9 months on, 9 months off, and that breastfeeding would be enough. I followed my appetite, and didn't lose the weight. This time around I'm counting calories and exercising (count those calories, too!) and am now down to a low I haven't seen since I was pregnant the first time.
Sigh. Who'd a thunk weighing what I did mid-pregnancy would be an achievement! Ah, well, onward ho.
Ennay - tough call -- I've seen a bunch of statements online that there are conflicting results from different studies about whether the codeine in T3 gets into the breastmilk. I think I was prescribed it in the hospital, but I wonder if they just figured that it wouldn't be a problem because my milk wasn't in yet? I was prescribed some other meds by a dermatologist when I was pregnant, and told not to take them, but my OB said I should go ahead. Do you have another doctor to query?
Kim - good luck on transitioning back to work!!! I hope your DD does as my friends' children have, and takes a bottle well when at child care.
Hautbois - teething already! My DS has been drooling a lot, and I seem to remember his big brother doing the same, though he didn't get his first tooth until 11 months. (DS1 6/05, DS2 3/07.) I'll cross my fingers for you that there's no early biting
Where is everybody? I am at 200.5 this morning! One-derland here I come! My supply rebounded pretty well. Love domperidone and mothers milk tea. I have to get some stashed before I have to start going into the office again 9/10.
Baby Kate seems to be having another little growth spurt, just wanted to nurse all day today. Makes it hard to type! :-)
I imagine that everything gets into the breastmilk, that doesn't necessarily mean it's harmful.
From everything I've read, the issue with converting codeine to morphine quickly is a rare one. Just monitor the baby & switch to something lighter as soon as you feel able.
I'm doing pretty good, of course not worrying about losing weight right now.
I think my supply is already starting to drop, because Esther's getting kind of frustrated with nursing at times.
Nursing/how many calories??? Keeping up the milk...Help!
Hi there Ladies....I have just joined the 30 somethings and thought this would be a good place for me too
I typically do not lose much weight while nursing....I am currently nursing baby #3 She is 3 months and I really want to get some of the weight off because I lost nothing between baby #2 and #3.
I started counting calories yesterday but I dont know how many I should be having. I am also concerned about the breast milk keeping up so any fab suggestions from you awesome ladies would be super appreciated
Thanks so much,
I will try to check in here later today but with three little ones at home I am busy busy busy.
Minnie, La Leche League recommends not going under about 1600 to 1800 calories a day while nursing, but I know several women who have successfully lost on a greater amount of calories. (Then again, if you've done any of those silly 1200 cal/day diets, 1800 is going to be a lot of food to you!)
I'd recommend the classical food journal method--eat normally for a few days, and write down everything you eat including amount (try to actually measure stuff, but don't restrict yourself)--then tot up the average calories to see how much you've been eating, & knock off about 500 cal from that; if nothing else it'll give you a good idea of what to start with (and you can see what you can easily knock out).
As far as keeping up with your milk supply--make sure you stay well-hydrated & eat as nutritiously as possible. And, of course, keep a good eye on how satisfied Baby is with your nursing sessions (though I seem to remember mine nursing nearly round-the-clock at that age anyhow), because you might need to make adjustments based on that.
Thanks that helps!
ok, so you are preggers with #4 ? Is that what the ticker says???
congrats to you
I just found out that my sister in law is going to have #6 next spring....her oldest will be 7 in feburary.
Phoebe/ my 3 month old nurses about every 3 hours but we both have a cold right now so she wants to nurse about every two.
anyhow, thanks again for your help.
Blessings to you and your happy family
I would love to have six children, but my hubby says #3 is our caboose. Which is ok with me now because it is so crazy busy...I may change my mind in a few years though.
Happy sunday everyone
Minnie
