How strange. I've lost 55 pounds now, and I get a little bit excited when I see people who haven't seen me in months, thinking, well, this will be a nice pat on the back for me! Yes, I know - but we'd all like to be complimented, wouldn't we?
So, today - for example - I went to my doctor, and neither he nor his receptionist (both who know me well), who haven't seen me since April, noticed any weight loss. So I prodded the receptionist by saying "Don't I look different?" <wink wink!> and she looks at me, looks nervous and says "Have you... lost some weight?" So I tell her, YES! 55 pounds! And her reply was simply "I don't really see it, but good for you, Heather!"
Now, here's my thought: was I just such an interesting person that people didn't NOTICE my weight, or (much more likely) am I still so large that no one can see a difference yet?
Anyone experienced this? I mean seriously, I started HEAVY... so ten pounds, twenty pounds, even thirty - I get it - you don't really see it. But 55? I really am laughing on the inside, because I suspect this is a symptom of how people see - or DON'T see - overweight people.
I've lost almost 50 lbs now and not even my BF says anything. I've only had one person say anything and that's because she truely saw me at my heaviest. She was like "Where's the rest of you?!" That made me feel so good.
But what would make me feel even BETTER is if EVERYONE noticed, ya know? I get down sometimes when I KNOW I look better, but I'm the only one that sees it. *sigh*
It's like.."DUH! 50 lbs??! That's HUGE!" You've done great girl, and I'm SURE people notice...they just might not know how to say it without potentially offending you. I'm sure you look fabulous because that's SUCH a big difference. If there is a big difference with 50 lbs in ME, and I weigh more than you, then it must be even MORE evident in yourself.
Keep your chin up. You'll probably lose another 5 lbs and everyone will be like "Where's your other half??"
No one noticed my weight loss until very recently (about the 65 lb mark). It was frustrating because I figured people who hadn't seen me in awhile would notice right away. Now there are more people noticing, but mainly commenting that I look "fitter" and in shape.
Just remember that you are doing this for yourself...that is what I keep telling myself! I was upset for awhile because my sister had gastric bypass and everyone was noticing because her loss was so quick...and my loss has not been as quick (I have been losing weight through diet and exercise).
So, I know how you feel! Congrats on the weight loss! You should be very proud of yourself! I am sure that many people have had experiences similar to ours.
I felt the same way when I went to visit a friend (a good guy friend who I was interested in, nonetheless!) and had lost a lot weight. He didn't say a thing! But honestly, I'm sure people ARE noticing! The receptionist probably very well did notice but might have felt uncomfortable saying so; she might have felt you would have assumed she was judging you before you had lost the weight.
The important thing is how you feel! You know you are losing weight and feeling better and fitting into smaller clothes. And 55 pounds is HUGE! Go to Home Depot sometime and pick up a huge 50 pound sack of gravel just for fun. (I know; that sounds like a hoot!) But think: that used to be on you!
Ok - I've lost 96 pounds and my primary care doctor STILL hasn't said anything. Most people tell me I look fantastic. Here is my theory - there are some people who truly do NOT notice stuff like that - very few. There are some people who see fat whether you are 50 pounds overweight or 250 pounds overweight. There are some people who will find your weight loss threatening to them - i see this A LOT lately. Just be proud of what you've done and s***w everyone else.
I went through the same thing. I am tall too and started out quite heavy.
While I thought it was so noticeable, it took about 60 lbs. and people were
looking at me strange like and would ask, "Are you losing weight?"
Seems like after that a LOT of people noticed and made comments.
So just hang in there, it'll happen!

Yes, this is happening to me right now, I've lost over 30 lbs and not one single person has noticed or said anything. Not one! I've gone from size 20 dresses to 16 or 14 and no one has said a word.
I think I should give a prize to the first person who notices.
I still haven't had anyone notice my weight loss. I imagine it's just because I started out so big. I don't see much of a change, either. But I'm only in the 30-35 lost range...maybe I'll start to notice soon?
Ugh, I can imagine how frustrating that would be! I've only lost about 5 pounds so far, but I worry that I'll get down to my goal weight and noone will notice anything!!!
I've noticed. I think you all look fantastic! Congratulations and keep up the good work!
(Don't worry. People will notice eventually, or they might already have noticed but not want to say anything, for whatever reason. While the pats on the back would be nice, that's not what this is all about. Take comfort in the fact that you're doing an amazing job and changing your life and getting healthier and healthier. It's less important that your ego gets fed )
Hi! I am new here but I have a question? do you notice it? I noticed having only lost 15 lbs so my waists on my skirts don't hurt me, my bra doesn't leave a red mark, I WANT to get up in the morning, I can walk up the stairs better. I can't wait to lose 50lbs! Congrats to you! (all of you) so the heck with them, and SHAME on your doctor! He should be thrilled for you. ok so I am still at the excited about the diet working phase maybe Ill quiet down, but I hope not. 15 down and 100 to go! And real excited to have found you all!
Hey chick! I think we are all going through that! I have lost close to 30 pounds off my short little frame, and only one person has genuinely noticed
I got so excited to see some old friends a couple of weekends ago, hoping they would notice my newly found waistline....nope. Not ONE of them noticed.
We've just got to do this for us, and hope that eveyone else realizes how hard we are working too.
