Default I was insulted today!!!!!

Ok so I am really irritated!! Just to show, these are my walking times for the past year and a half, yeah some months I slacked off and some I picked up....
I actually started in 2005 in June when I was 280 pounds but I would have to dig to find the stats from that year. Anyhow roughly 2 years of experience seriously walking.

Walking minutes for 2006

April 220
May 760
June 1060
July 1730
August 1185
Sept 1695
Oct 2080
Nov 2465
Dec 1639

Walking minutes for 2007

Jan 865
Feb 285
March 430
April 300
May 920
June 1128
July 1170 (so far!!)

Okay so I have been doing quite a few 90 minute walks lately and as I am about 25 minutes from home, some old guy comes walking up to me and says hi, so I am polite and say hi back.

Then he asks, "What are you doing?"

I said, "I am walking."

He said, "I see you walking every day this way, where you walking from?"

I said, "My house."

He said, "How far is that?"

I said, "It is about 90 minutes all around."

He said "Why do you do that?"

I said, "Because exercise is good for you."

And as he is walking away he said, "No it's not, that is hard on your heart. You are too heavy to be walking all that way. You are pumping too much adrenaline thru your blood and it is going to kill you, you are going to have a heart attack!!!"

I said, "No I am not!"

He said, "Yes you are!"

I said, "No I am not!!"

I am SOOOO mad!!! It is not like I am 212 pounds and all fat and no muscle!!! I have plenty of muscle on me, am very healthy and I have climbed down 68 pounds from 280! There is no way I can lose that much weight, walk this much, and not be healthy. I was NOT out of breath or even sweating!!!

I am not going to throw my fat butt out on some 90 minute walk if I am going to collapse! Any time I start walking, I start small, then I build it up, even when I slacked off at the beginning of the year, when I got serious again I did not throw myself out on a 90 even though I WOULD of been fine. I stuck to some 30's, then 60, now 90's are fine for me.

Even heart patients are told to walk to strengthen their heart!!!

I am so sick of people who think just cause you got some extra weight on you that you are just going to collapse and have a heart attack. If I didn't have a heart attack walking my fat butt 2 years ago at 280 pounds then I sure as **** am not going to now. I am MADDDDDDDD!!!!!

Let me tell you something sweetheart....most men..KNOW NOTHING! UGH! It drives me nuts when people are so uneducated and yet they try to educate us. Like...hellooo? The people that know the most about nutrition and exercise are those that are doing something about their excessive weight problem. I've probably studied more about nutrition and exercise than any 140 lb 6 foot man.

That's like my brother saying "Gaterade is better than pop to drink because it has soooo much less sugar content". So he drinks 96 ounces of it a day? *raises an eyebrow*

Some people are too stuborn to listen to others...such as this man. He probably misunderstood someone and he sticks with his version of it. I wouldn't turned around and said "Bite me! If you can catch me!".

Good for you for standing up for yourself!

Don't let it get you mad. He wins if you do. You know your limits. You stick to what works for you. The next time you're out walking and pass by his house or work or whatever, give him a big grin and a wave hello. You know there is no way a stranger could know what is best for you.

Ugh people like that should keep their big gobs shut!

You should be SO proud of how far you've come and he's probably jealous because he sees you out walking all the time and you're healthier than him.

One of my skinny mates was shocked that I am fitter than her even though I'm 50lbs heavier...a higher weight does not necessarily mean you're not fit!

You KNOW you're healthy so ignore people like that moron.

Sorry to hear that someone brought you down.

No matter how good you are at something, how right you are, how much progress you've made, etc., there will always be people who want to bring negative energy into your life. Just shut yourself off from it. Turn your back and keep walking in the direction of your goals in life. Whether its walking, career-related, relationship-related, etc. Whatever it is that someone is criticizing, just turn your back.

the poor guy is probably lonely and looking for conversation?

Thanx everyone. I know you are right. I was sitting here telling my 14 y/o about this and I couldn't help start laughing. hahahahahahah Some people are so clueless!!! I forgot to mention he had a beer in his hand and was walking back from the liquor store with a brown bag.

Yeah go drink yourself into a stupor, that is a GREAT way to ensure good health. I almost said that too, but I bit my tongue. People can be ugly and I do not have to stoop to their level. In all probablility he was just really stupid and was not trying to be a jerk. He must REALLY think that heavy people can NOT walk that far. lol

Thanx, are you walking too?

I believe you 100% I am a firm believer in that too. How did you two test that out? Who is fitter? There is one neighbour lady who sees me walk every once in a while and she always swings over to see if I need a ride(every few months I see her) and I always tell her I am exercising and she always says, "Come and get me some time!"

*eye roll*

Well I don't really care for her company or I wouldn't mind encouraging her by doing that if she really wanted too. But the first thing on my mind always is, if YOU really want to get walking, why do you need some neighbour who lives a few blocks away that you scarcely even know to come get you to walk?

The second thing I always think is how slow would I have to walk so we could "walk together"????? Would 10 minutes be too much for you?? Ugghhhhhh......

I remember where we go to pay the rent even, you used to have to go in a door, and walk down a hall, one month it was just you open a door and there is a table, and you pay. I asked and the lady said people complained it is TOO FAR to walk!!!! My gosh people are SOOO lazy!!!

And people wonder why so many Americans are over weight! We eat too much and we don't exercise enough!!!! And when we do see someone exercising, it is like, oh I hope they don't hurt themselves!!!

Grrrr......

What a jerk! There's nothing to do with people like that except ignore them. He's probably just trying to justify his own lack of exercise.

You go girl! You are doing fantastic!

MeredithP1:

You are right about that. My best friend had the surgery and lost 140 pounds. She is 150, 5'4 and shows up to a family reunion, NO ONE commented on how much she had lost or how great she was looking, well maybe one, but that was it! She was so crushed!!!

All her cousins are like a size 0-2 and I told her no matter what there will always be someone richer, prettier, better job, skinnier than you etc. Ya know?

Exactly!!! I have extensively researched walking and nutrition and I know what I am doing. I am not going to do something dangerous!!!

the poor guy is probably lonely and looking for conversation?

Well my dh is acvtually reall p.o.d' and I know he would LOVE to have a conversation with him right now.

Come back to our thread! I miss you!!!!

Thanx Mariposita and Blue.

As you already know, that guy's a complete idiot!

I just want to congratulate you on your progress -- you're doing FANTASTIC! I hate that there are idiots in the world who can bring people down when they're doing something so wonderful for their health. I know he didn't REALLY bring you down, because you've come too far for that, but even for you to feel insulted for a second -- that really makes me angry!!!

You keep up the awesome work you are doing! That man is a jerk. My mother tried to tell me that we don't need much exercise the other day on the phone. She has been overweight most of her life and refuses to admit that her total lack of exercise might be the issue.
