Smile Hello from Iowa!

Good day, everyone,

My husband (Mike) and I are trying yet again to lose weight, but I know I need some kind of support network. Unfortunately we can't afford to join a paying program like Weight Watchers. I'm hoping maybe if I become really involved with all you lovely ladies, that will spark me to some accountability.

I am 5'11", and weigh 248.6 pounds. At my largest I weighed about 300. With lots of consistent exercise and diet, I dropped to 225. Then I let it lapse and over a year or two rose to about 265. Then I got pregnant and now at 7 months post-partum am down to where I am currently. My goal weight is 175.

Another related goal is to make exercising fun for our family, especially in light of starting to raise our children. For both me and my husband, exercise was never a fun thing. At gym class it was always 'Okay, now we're going to run a mile with no preparation!' and we always thought exercise = no fun and pain. But now we're learning differently, and want to make sure our children never have that other attitude.

We REALLY struggle with healthy foods. My husband only likes a very limited amount of fruits and vegetables (I swear sometimes he's pickier than a child), and I'm allergic to some fruits (bananas and cantaloupe). He likes canned corn, raw carrots (in a limited number), canned green beans, and frozen peas. I love trying all kinds of new ways to prepare vegetables, but for now that means I'm only cooking for myself, which is a struggle in itself. It's hard to make myself believe it's worth it to cook up a batch of some new veggie recipe, when if I end up not liking it is going in the trash. If I do like it, I have to eat it all (usually a few days worth!) before it goes bad. But I continue to try.

My daughter is Madeline--she's just over 7 months old now. She just started crawling this last weekend! She is really such a joy and we are so happy to be parents.

I work from home, so I'm on the computer ALL DAY and don't even have the normal opportunities to slip exercise in (such as parking in the farthest spot in the parking lot at work). Some days I never even leave the house. Of course, with our aim to exercise we are actively combating that. Just a few weeks ago we bought a used Burley bike trailer, and we've been riding bikes everywhere with Madeline in tow. I really enjoy walking, but it is a struggle to get my husband to walk with me.

I was born in California, went to college in Pennsylvania, took this job in New Jersey, then moved to Iowa (Grinnell) to get married.

I look forward to meeting all of you and helping support you in your own goals!

-Misty

Edited to add: I am 27 (28 in September).

Welcome, Misty! A belated congratulations on the birth of your daughter! I'm sure she's such a cutie!

Have you thought about getting up early and doing an exercise video on TV? That's what got me through the not-leaving-the-house blues while my kids were young (well, they're still young, but my husband and I have figured out a little system so I can get to the gym now).

And the veggies...you know, sometimes we have to learn to like things. It's for his health and as much as donuts and ice cream taste better than brussel sprouts, when you think about the effect the good foods have on your body versus the bad ones, it's worth it to keep yourself going for the sake of you children! Check out the "veggie challenged" section down below. Maybe you'll get some ideas for interesting ways to incorporate vegetables into your family's meal plan.

Good luck with your loss!

Kara
