Default Mayo Substitutes?

Hi everyone! I love sandwiches...But I also used to love gooping tons of mayo on them....'Til I actually started counting calories and figured out HOLY JESUS that's alot of fat and calories packed into a tiny little tablespoon LOL.

I hate the light mayo..I can't stand just mustard alone...Miracle Whip tastes like crap.

So I was browsing the condiments one day and saw Horseradish sauce..The creamy white kind..15 cals per teaspoon (1.5 grams of fat though per teaspoon). I have started using it in place of mayo on my sandwiches because I just love the taste...So spicy hehe.

What do you guys use instead of mayo?

Afraid I'm a Miracle Whip lover . . . although I don't like the Fat Free variety the Low Fat isn't too bad. Totally opposite to you, I can't stand mayonnaise.

Anyway . . . a suggestion for you . . . how about Salsa? I love the stuff and it is very, very low calorie. It can be a little runny so you might want to strain it a bit for use on a sandwich.

LOL...I can' STAND salsa on anything but tortilla chips (so I don't have to eat the chunks). Good suggestion though...Something about the consistancy..Just like some people can't stand cottage cheese.

I use lots of tomatoes, sometimes lettuce and red onion and maybe a little Dijonnaise, very low in calories but a little spicy. I do love horseradish also.

I'm big on Miracle Whip Light..no fat free cuz it tastes funny. I like to use honey mustard instead when I want a variety.

I like the Trader Joe's brand of light mayo, but I do agree that most are nasty.

Horseradish is good as you discovered and I also like to use hummus. Mashed avocado is good too, but it's high in fat (the good kind.)

Oh, have you ever made yogurt cheese? You take plain yogurt (non-fat or low-fat) and put it in a sieve lined with cheese cloth. Then you put it in the fridge overnight. In the morning it'll be the consistency of cream cheese, but lower in calories. Yogurt cheese is really good on whole wheat bread with mustard and sprouts. Yum!

Smart Balance makes a fat free mayo that is only 10 calories a serving. I haven't tried it yet because my grocery store doesn't stock it, but it got an excellent review in Health magazine. They also recommended French's light Gourmayo and Helmann's light mayo.

I've become quite the mustard connoisseur. Right now, my fridge contains three kinds of mustard--a standard stone ground dijon that I use for cooking and Tarragon mustard and Sun-Dried Tomato Mustard for sandwiches. I look for unique flavors and varieties at specialty gourmet food stores (Cost Plus is also a good source). Since you like the horseradish spread, you might want to try some more exotic flavors of mustard.

I've never been a big mayo fan, so I don't really miss it that much on sandwiches. I'm happy with just mustard. Sometimes I also add chutney, raspberry chipotle sauce, hummus, or nonfat cream cheese.

For cooking and in salads, I use nonfat yogurt as a sub for mayo. I'm becoming somewhat of a nonfat Greek yogurt addict--I stir my cereal into it instead of using milk, eat it on Mexican food instead of sour cream, and eat it on oatmeal instead of milk. The next thing you know, I'll be spreading it on sandwiches, but I'm sure that isn't for everyone.

Depends, i'm also a light miracle whip lover. But I'll also use honey mustard. Some times i'll even go a little crazy and use some low fat poppyseed ranch that I just bought (and i'm obsessed with!) or hummus. So good!

I use Kraft Light Mayo. I also make a homemade fake honey mustard sauce (made with Splenda). I have a homemade "Arby's" sauce and Barbecue sauce that I use for burgers.

I'm a mustard girl, with pickles.
Or a wee bit of bbq sauce, diana sauce.
Or, for a creamy texture, ranch salad dressing (low cal, low fat).

If you go to a recipe site, you can do a search for low fat or fat free mayo. Homemade is much better. I don't like any light/free versions of mayo. Homemade mayo has a totally different but good taste to it.

Try recipezaar
