No, it's not some new cool diet where you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days... it's what I have been doing for the past 30 YEARS. And I think it is part of the reason why I'm having such a difficult time now (that, plus the fact that I'm over 40, hormonal as ****, and in the joy of peri-menopause...
I just read an article about the possibility that yo-yo dieting may be actually harmful to the efforts of weight loss.
And yeah, it makes sense. But what really burns me? My mother said the SAME THING to me about 10 years ago .....now tell me, why mamas always gotta be right????
Anyone else here a famous "yo-yo" dieter? I'm trying really hard to make THIS TIME the LAST TIME that I ever have to LOSE weight. Once I reach the goal THIS TIME, I want to be a MAINTAINER for life! Dagnabit!
Beach, when you reach goal this time, we're going to haul your (cute) butt off to the Maintainers Forum and duct tape you there for life. You're going to stick with us and work maintenance every freaking day and STAY THERE this time!! (or double your money back )
Seriously, come check us out now. You don't have to be at goal to start working on maintaining.

I know.. but I'm still 23 pounds from goal... so no way I can maintain just yet~!
Hey, Beach. Yep, your mama was definitely right about the yo-yo dieting. I've been one for years too and am sure it screwed up my metabolism and is the cause of my hypothyroidism. This is the last time for me, though, and I am not goingt to put the weight back on again. I eat a low-cal diet and exercise for 60-90 minutes 6 days a week and am still losing a bit but it doesn't take much to make me gain, even with all the exercising. A few run ins with the peanut butter jar and I'm up 5 pounds just like that.
Pam
Good points Meg...Maintaining does start at the moment you start your diet...or new lifestyle.
For instance...I'm maintaining myself losing weight. I hope I never go back to eating the junk I used to and I hope that I will always be active like I am now. I love the way I feel and the energy I have. I want to bear children in a healthy body..not an overweight, overbearing body.
I like the idea that maintaining starts at the beginning!
I have a PhD in YoYo dieting. At least I didn't start until I was 40. Up until then I was skinny, thin, slim in that order. Yikes, that means I have been struggling with weight for almost 25 years now. Holy moley. I think it must be time for me to "get it".
You've lost 20 pounds already ... bet you're interested in maintaining that loss. Maintenance starts on Day One of your diet.
I never really looked at it like that, but you're right! Even if I don't lose another pound, I do want to maintain the 20 that I've already lost - cause 158 is better than 178 any day of the week & twice on Sundays!
I have invaded the maintainers forum many times My weight loss isn't linear though, over the past few years, I've lost weight, stopped and maintained, lost weight, stopped and maintained, etc. It is also important to know the struggles that will occur once you do get to your ultimate goal.
I've been to maintainers a couple of times apparently I forgot the duct tape. I still peek in now and again.
Every loser should go read there. They're lovely folks, really!
Ya'll know I hang out in the maintainers area all the time and I'm still not at goal. I figure they have something to offer to get me in the mindset of maintaining. And I have been pretty good--I maintained for 6 months, but just recently saw an increase, so I'm back on the diet bandwagon in hopes of making goal this time. I don't like yo-yoing either.
