Default What's the scoop on butter?

Pre-Beach I used to add a pat of butter (maybe half a tablespoon) to a bag of veggies after I'd steamed them. Should I substitute olive oil or margerine? Or is a little butter OK every now and again?

Kara, we should avoid butter, since it's so high in fat. Have you tried serving your vegetables with no seasonings at all. They're really delicious. You can use olive oil or an SBD approved margarine if you prefer, though. Smart Balance and the ICBINB spray are some good ones.

Your choice but butter is NOT part of the South Beach lifestyle because of the saturated fat. Olive oil and some margarines are healthy fats.

Thanks. It was more habit than anything. Just a bit of butter and some salt and pepper. I have always abhored hydrogenated oils and have avoided margerine because of them. Just too much work to look at all the ingredients! I'll use olive oil instead. I love it, anyway.

I also love butter..REAL butter (especially "Challenge" brand) and I used to cook and bake with it every day. Margarine wasn't even allowed in this house.

I got some of the smart balance spray and use it on "plain" vegetables that are just steamed or nuked..just a couple of squirts and I'm a happy girl.I also squirt it on my WG bread every now and then when I want a plain piece of toast and I use it on waffles.

I was cleaning out my fridge the other day and saw a brand new pack of butter and thought, ewww, THAT's been in there a few months. Threw it out. Shame I didn't freeze it a long time ago.

I do plan on using all the "real" stuff for Thanksgiving and Christmas though...I have not cheated once since starting SB and on those 2 days, I plan to CHEAT.

I admit to using butter, but then again that's under the advice of Midwife - paranoid about getting enough fat I guess. I have cut down my use, and only use it on veggies. I have tried olive oil, and it's not too bad. Garlic flavoured oil sprinkled on crunchy green beans is delish!

smart balance is good. butter has saturated fats and is not heart healthy

if it's habit Kara break the habit and have those veggies freshy steamed with some seasonings such as pepper or garlic and no butter or oil.....

It's part habit and part loving the taste of butter.

Fortunately (for my taste buds and heart, not my wallet) I savor a good quality olive oil as well. We had an excellent local one when we were in California but now they're all just what the store carries. I CANNOT wait to get to Germany and be able to get the Italian oils, hopefully at a decent price!

And that's the scoop on butter!
I think we've pretty much covered this topic.

We're going to Ramstein. Southwestern Germany, about seventeen miles from France from what I've heard.
