Default A neat reward system

I just came across this article that I saved a long time ago. I do not have the author's name, so please forgive me for not giving credit. I will say, this is not my idea, so no credit taken for myself. If you know who the author is, please be sure to post a reply with their name so they can get proper credit. I thought it was a neat reward system myself. See below....

***********************************
A Reward System

Food meets emotional as well as physical needs. When you no longer use food to meet your emotional needs -- and indeed, food must not be used to meet emotional needs -- you need other meaningful rewards to take its place.

Plan a system of rewards which are valuable to you and which give you instant feedback. A pat on the back when you have done well helps you to continue to do well.

Assign points for certain activities completed within a specific amount of time. For example, give yourself 3 points for following your diet for one day; following the diet for a whole week may be worth a bonus of 25 points; and walking to work, one way, may be worth 2 points.

Decide on your rewards and how many points each one is worth. For example, a night out may require 50 points; 100 points may be required for putting $25 toward a new dress for the new you (after weight loss); and a weekend retreat may be worth 250 points.

I actually do something very similar. I keep a chart in the front of my day planner each month. I assign either 1 or 2 points for each daily activity I am trying to incorporate based on difficulty for me. It's not just weightloss activities like walking the dog & drinking enough water but also other goals like keeping my tv watching down or doing so much housework every day.

At the end of the month I have a very visual (because it is in chart form) indication of how I am doing. Those that I still struggle with move onto the next month's chart (sometimes changing point value), those that I aced come off 'cause I feel I've got them down as habits & then I add any new ones I want to tackle for the month.

I look forward to keeping the tally each day so it is motivating. More than once I have chug-a-lugged the water just to get another point.

I have to admit I'm not good at actually following through with any rewards I set - but I do find just achieving success for a goal is often enough in itself.

I like the "bonus points" idea. Thanks for sharing this!
