Default Periods screwy

Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone with diabetes is having problems with their periods - either skipped, or irregular, or just spotting (like I've been having)

I am going for a full physical/pap in August - the doctor said it could be the metformin that I started on a few weeks ago.

Hey,

My cycles have always been irregular...but I also have thyroid problems that can contribute to that... and being as overweight as I am also contributes. I've always been irregular- even before I was diagnosed as diabetic and put on meds... so I'm really no help.

I started getting terrible cramps after I was diagnosed, so in Fall of 2005, a year and a half after my diagnosis, I went to my doctor to discuss my irregularities and monster cramps.

I ended up coming out of that appointment with a prescription for Seasonale, the birthcontrol pill that allows you only 4 periods a year, and its been tremendous for me. I dont spot or have to put up with cramps every month.

I dont know if this is an option for everyone, but it worked for me. I would definitely discuss this with your doctor though!

I'm 42 so my problems (I guess) could be the start of menopause? I guess it's a waiting game until my physical in August.

Thanks for your input

It could be. Although in today's terms women seem to be reaching menopause later and later in life!

I'm so grateful for the UK Health system, except for one issue. Sure the prescriptions and health care's all free here, but if you want any special hospital appointments or need an operation, you could be playing the waiting game for 6 months!

Good luck though chica, and keep chuggin along <3

Gee THIN . . . . . . afraid I'm not much help either . . . I know I was well into menopuase by the time I was diagnosed with Diabetes so I guess I never gave any weirdness of periods a thought . . . just figured it was meopausal stuff. Let us know what the doctor has to say.

Thanks for your input, too, CASANDRA . . . . . . Could be very helpful for others who may have similar experiences.

Default perimenopausal

You very well could be perimenopausal, only your MD can let you know for sure after lab work. If that is what you are experiencing it doesnt have to be scary and process can take up to 10 years to complete. I viewed a program by Dr. Christiane Northrup on a PBS chanel but know it is available on dvd. Great program and goes into depth how hormones play abig role in our BS readings as well.

Thanks everyone -

I would prefer not to have periods lol. but I admit pregnancy crossed my mind when it was late (but I had my tubes tied 10 years ago) I am not going to worry about it.

I'll see what happens by august.

If it helps to know, I've been on ortho novum 7777 for many years to regulate my otherwise crazy periods. It's really helped me. Though at one time I was on a generic version and had alot of problems, much longer periods, heavier...My doc said never take the generic as the hormones in them are not the same...

I have diabetes and PCOS, and a symptom of PCOS is weird/missed periods. You should definitely look into PCOS and talk to your doctor about it if you think this could be a possibility

YEP! I am "pre-diabetic" I am also 47.... at 38 i started having the complete opposite periods from what I had been.... it's normal in perimenopause to do that. I went from being light and irregular to being long heavy and REGULAR.... go figure.

3 years ago I had a procedure called an Ablation so now I barely bleed but i still have all the other stuff that goes with it.

i found that eating better tends to affect our periods as well...

I asked my doctor if i needed to have the hormone test to show i was in perimenopause and he said "nope cause you are and i'm not giving your HRT anyway".... so i suffer along...

ThinGirl, I am 43, have always had very bad/heavy periods, until I had an endometrioma removed 2 years ago. Then, last November, my periods almost vanished...I've always been very regular. I've been enjoying this, until my doc put me on Metformin last month. Now, it's baaaacccckkkk...

So for me, I don't know if it's perimenopause, or last November was when I became diabetic, and now on met my bg has stabilized.
