Default PCOS vs.Syndrome X

Hello everyone...this is my first day here and I am very glad to see there is a forum for people with PCOS! I had never heard of it until my husband and I were trying to have a baby and due to the fact I never ovulate, it was impossible. My doctor told me I needed to lose weight (I was at almost 250 lbs. then) and put me on metformin. I took that, did some fertility things...and then got accepted for a new job, which sent me away from home for 2 months. We put thoughts of a baby on hold and because I was trying to get in shape for my job, I slowly lost 40 lbs.

Anyway...my question is...
are PCOS and Syndrome X the same thing? Because I thought my doctor mentioned both of them to me and I just want to make sure I haven't been missing something key! I know very little about PCOS other than what it does to me and that if I don't lose weight and eat healthier, bad things will happen.

Has anyone found that losing even just a few pounds has changed things, such as menstruation or ovulation? If I gain even 3 pounds I can totally skip it for a few months...then if I lose again it comes back. Is this the norm??
I have also found that since I took the medicine 2 years back...the metformin and the medicine to force your body into having a period (I haven't taken either since August 2005)...now when my body decides to do this, it is VERY painful and just not like anything I have ever experienced.

Sorry this is long...it's only my 2nd post and I'm a bit overzealous!!
Thank you!!
Jess
