Default muscle pull or what?

Hi everyone, I don't post much but I'm here everyday reading away, absorbing so much information from all of you. I'm new to exercising, particularly weight training, and have only been working out since last August. I've lost 50 pounds and worked with a personal trainer at my gym a few times. The last time I worked out with him was a few months ago and he taught me an exercise for my abs where I lie on an incline bench with my feet ponting downhill. I grasp the foot holds with my hands, bend my knees and then lift my legs up. This was really hard at first but I was always able to eek out 3 sets of 12-15. Over the last few weeks it started getting easier and I was jazzed about my progress, although my abs did seem flatter they also seemed thicker, if that makes any sense. Then I noticed I started getting sharp pains in my lower abs some days when I did the exercise. I always stopped when I felt the pain and went back to it about a week later. Sometimes the pain came back when I tried again, and sometimes not. This last Tuesday I did the exercise and felt the pain again. It was pretty severe so I stopped the excercise and did other things, like push-ups but they hurt my abs too. Wednesday morning my lower ab muscles were pretty sore so I iced them. Ditto on Thursdauy. Today they're still sore and tender and I'm starting to worry that I may have injured myself, or worse, that I have some other wierd medical problem. The area seems a bit swollen, too. Any thoughts on what I should do at this point. I didn't work out Wed or Thur but did go to the gym today and did 50 min of cardio. I felt some slight cramping in the area but nothign too bad.
Thanks so much for any thoughts/insights. I'm trying not to be a baby about this but I don't want to overlook anything either.
Pam

If it is your lower abs and it is swollen sometimes I would definitely get that checked out by a doctor.

I'd go to a doc, too. It may be nothing more than a bad strain, but you want to make sure.

Thanks Mel and Audrey. I haven't been able to get onto the forum because of the server change over and am just able to access the messages this morning. My abdomen still hurts a bit and I feel a slight swelling/bulge right above my public bone. It's really strange. I probably should have gone to the doc and didn't. I'm going to give it another few days and then go if it doesn't go away.

Pam,
A bulge just above your pubic bone could be that there is a tear in the membrane around there. I do not know the english word for it. Go to a doc, if it is that tear thing, it will not heal by itself but it needs to be stitched surgically.

Please go to a doc and do not wait with it.

Hernia is the word you're looking for Rabbit. And yes, Pam, you need a doc. Even if it's only stretched and not torn, it's nothing to fool around with.

The rule my PT told me was that if the pain was a general one that builds up its the muslce working. If its a short sharp blinding pain STOP NOW.

As others have said, go straight to the doctors!
