Default good fat is good, but how much?

Hi all

I know we are allowed a certain amount of nuts or nut butter a day. I know we can have 1/3 avocado a day. I know we can have oils, reduced fat dairy and cheeses, olives, etc. But all this all in one day? Or pick and choose? Peanut butter and oil one day, avocado another, for example?

I am trying to wrap my mind around the idea that good fat is good, and that it helps keep cravings and overeating to a minimum, but how much overall fat in a day is really ok and when is it too much? I have been putting my food into fitday.com and my % of fat for the day seems high (right above or below 50%- I just started Phase 2 yesterday) Plus, I am nursing, so I need to eat more than non-nursing women.

Thanks! any advice would be great!

Since you are nursing you may need more fat. Perhaps you could check with your doctor or in the pregnancy and breastfeeding section of Dieting With Obstacles.
My dietician says we need 20 to 40 grams of fat per day to effectively utilize the vitamins and minerals in our food. In my case, that works out to about 40% of my calories from fat.

Thanks for the reply. Anyone else have any ideas? Forget that I am nursing, I am still curious how much of all those fats those of you who have success with SB actually eat in a day. Do you have all your oil, all your avocado, all your nuts and your olives and reduced fat cheeses all in a day? Or just some of each in a day? thanks!

Hi,

Each day, I eat one service of nuts and one serving of cheese. I don't eat avocados or olives. As far as oil, I use olive oil in my vegetables at lunch and some sort of oil is usually included in my Southbeach dinner recipe. I also use 2 tsp of sugar-free creamer in my coffee in the morning and I sometimes have 1/2 cup of sugar-free ice- cream in the evening. However, the creamer and ice-cream are not recommended by the plan....this is just my idea. When the weight loss stalls, I'll have to re-think those.
