Hi everyone. I’m trying to eat more “superfoods” as a part of my low calorie diet. I read that walnuts are great for you and provide a lot of omega 3 and protein. Last night I went to eat some and saw that ¼ cup was 200 calories and 20 grams of fat! I had room for the 200 calories, but I could only let myself eat 1/8 of a cup because I was so afraid of the 20 grams of fat. I’m curious, would you or do you eat walnuts or other nuts, given the high calorie and fat?
I went through a phase of eating four walnuts before any high(ish) fat meal as I have read several studies that say they can protect your arteries from the effect of fat. I stopped because I don't like them, neither the taste nor the texture - not because of any particular calorie concern. I'm sure though that walnuts and other nuts (especially Brazil nuts) have a role in a healthy diet - just only a very few at a time.
In fact, when I eat a couple of Brazil nuts a day I notice my skin, nails and hair look better.
I eat superfoods everyday. I try and eat some nuts of any kind once a day.
I also count calories and eat 1300 -1450 a day. I usually put them in yogurt or on top of a salad. Then I am eating more than 1 superfood at a time.
I eat a handful of either walnuts or almonds everyday. The fats are GOOD fats and I don't pay any mind to how many grams there are for that reason. Studies have shown that if you eat a small handful of nuts 20 -30 minutes before a meal those good fats help your mind think you are full!
I am that way with peanuts, but not with the walnuts and almonds. I eat the proper portion of those just fine. (and that is just as well, the peanuts are NOT as high up on the good for you list!!)
I eat whole, natural almonds daily. High in calories - but so good for you!
Another high fat (good fat)/high calorie food I eat is avocados. About once a month I will have a few tablespoons. Use it as a spread on a turkey sandwich... yummy!!
I would and actually do eat walnuts everyday. I have 2 tbsp. with my cereal every morning (well, on the days I eat cereal, which is most days of the week). Please don't be scared of fats. Good fats are vital to our health. As with anything though, moderation is key. But walnuts are a superfood for a reason.
I love nuts but I can't stop at one serving so I have to heavily control myself. If I could control my eating with nuts, I'd definitely eat them every day.
I wish I could eat them every single day - but I can't. I am not satisfied with a few walnuts, almonds and the such. I really like them and don't have good control with them. Though they are so very healthy for me it just doesn't work. I am a calorie snob at heart and can't get past the high calorie content. Again, IF I could stop at a few that would be fine.
12 almonds = 82 calories! I count them out everytime I have them. I eat them slowly with a large glass of water and I am fine. I don't eat the walnuts as often as I do the almonds....you only get 7 walnut halves for the same amount of calories.
Mrs. Quadcrew, I still have a looong ways to go. I simply have not mastered the art of eating slowly. It is something I really, REALLY need to work on. 12 almonds would be gone in 10 seconds. Maybe 12 secs. Part of my enjoyment of food is that it should last at least longer then that (lol). We all have to know our weaknesses and address them. That's one of mine. I know myself and it just doesn't work - for now.
Robin - that is totally understandable! (that is why I don't have peanuts instead!!) Everyone does what works for them, and you definately know what works for you - you're an inspiration to so many here!
This is one of my "exercises" in control too - I used to wolf down things like this without thinking about it. Now, i count them out, then I chew each nut, and think about it - so it is not only my good fats for the day, it is an exercise in how I learn to control myself too. I know it sounds soo goofy, but I chew each nut till it is almond butter!
I literally have had to retrain myself how to eat - this is just one of the ways I practice. It works for me - but I understand how nuts can easily be a bad thing for others.
