Default HEY! Leggo My Chayote!!!

(Chay-oat-ay)
My chef son brought home a fruit/veg/? thing that he bought at the Asian market by his school.
It was very crunchy and very good.
I've seen them for ages but I thought they were more squash like, or mushy.
They are very juice in a radish way, but tastes like a potato/radish/cucumber/pear, lol, sorry for vague description, but I think you have to try it for yourself.
Very good and I found out, very low cal!
1 humongous pear size is only around 35 cals for the whole thing!
You can cook it or eat it raw.
The skin is edible, but like a cucumber, don't eat too much of the skin.

I'm curious if others have eaten these and if not, after you try them, post your opinion?
(He also brought home a little Korean Melon, a little yellow squash looking melon, ever hear of them?)

I've seen this in all the Hispanic markets too. I think I will have to try it. Thanks!

Chayote is very popular in mexican cuisine. I eat them quite often. They are a form of squash but very mild.

Nope, I'm not a surfer or named Mike. My DH is kind of "obsessed" with them since he broke his sister's years ago. We picked this particular one up in Vancouver on our honeymoon.

Interesting; I see these all the time at the grocery store. I'll give one a go. Sounds good!

So it's definately a squash? I've never eaten squash raw, so maybe more types of squash are good raw?
Hmmm...

Oh, and don't forget the Korean Melon. About the size of a lemon on steroids, and tastes like a cross between cuke and honeydew. But not as sweet.

My son say's he's going to bring home a Durian next!! I'm scared!

Well, we were grocery shopping tonight, and I picked up a chayote...YUM! I will definitely be a repeat customer. Plus, I have a restricted medical diet that makes it difficult for me to get enough Vitamin C, but chayotes give me a large percentage of my daily requirements! Thanks so much for posting this.

As for durian...you'll either love it or hate it. I tried one for the first time 10 years ago (Singaporean variety); my grandfather loved it, while I thought it tasted like rotting garlic. That said, my tastes have evolved a lot since then, so maybe I'd enjoy it now...

I love chayote, but I've only ever had it one way and that's in a filipino chicken soup.

I've never had it raw and if it does indeed taste a lot like cucumber, I'll have to give it a try.
