Default The 34 Stone Teenager

Some of you might remember this programme from last year. I think we had a thread about it at the time. Just to let everyone know that there's a follow up programme on BBC3 at 9pm tomorrow, it will be interesting to see how she did after WLS.

Edit - there's some chat on this thread about the original programme.

I remember seeing that! I really hope she's made good progress, I felt so desperately sorry for her. Will be watching tonight.

Did you all watch this?

I thought she was doing brilliantly weight-loss wise although she seemed to think it would just fall off a lot quicker somehow. The weight loss surgery did not change her habit of comfort eating - no suprise there! - but the therapist seemed really helpful in helping her to overcome that and she came out with a far better self esteem.

Her mother was annoying me however: far from encouraging her with healthy options she was trying to persuade her to have Weight Watchers pizza and low-fat crisps. Fine for most people but not after WLS surely where nutritionally sound food is vital because of the small quantities eaten I was left wondering how much of her initial weight gain was enablling behaviour by her mother???

I was glad she was doing well by the end, but did have to wonder whether the therapy helped more than the surgery, and how she'd have coped if she'd tackled the underlying issues earlier, before having the surgery. She did look so much happier though, so good on her.

I was relieved to see that she was still losing weight, albeit at a rather slower rate than expected. I was concerned when we saw her going in for the operation that she was viewing surgery as the answer to all her problems, whereas in fact the issues that made her overeat in the first place would still be waiting for her when she came out of hospital.

I do think it's a shame that there was no-one to work with her to re-educate her about her eating habits and help her to make healthier choices. Especially as this was a BBC production and they do lots of programmes where experts do exactly that! It's almost like they were waiting for her to fail so they could film it.

I pretty much agree with everyone else... I found the mother irritating - Bethany seemed to know what she wanted/needed to eat and yet her Mum was trying to persuade her in to less healthy options and its a shame that her family's idea of a 'good' Christmas seemed to revolve around how much food they can eat.

The therapy thing was interesting - very effective - shame so little time was devoted to it. Am I right that she couldn't get the therapy on the National Health but DID get the weight loss surgery on the NH?

She could get it, but would have had to wait 6 months - which was too long given her situation

6 months! I agree with Helen, they should have exlored the idea of therapy long before they even considered surgery, especially as it seems to be working well for her.

Sarah Ann - I think her surgery was carried out privately as she was attending a Nuffield hospital. It's shocking that the consultant did feel the need to send her for therapy. It sounded like he didn't even know of a therapist that could help as he wrote to her GP rather than cross-referring to an NHS hospital.
