Default Diabetes Information - Favourite Books

Here's a couple of my favourite Diabetes Information books . . .

My Doctor Says I Have a Little Diabetes, by Martha Hope McCool and Sandra Woodruff

Diabetes for Dummies, by Alan L. Rubin

Very informative and fairly easy to read.

Please add any favourite Diabetes books you may have run across to this Sticky and don't forget to use the 3FC link to Amazon (see "Store" in the purple navigation bar at the top of the forum page) whenever you purchase from Amazon.

Sorry CHUBZ . . . there is no cure for diabetes (at least not yet). It can be controlled but it cannot be cured. For someone who is diagnosed as pre-diabetic, full fledged diabetes can be avoided by diet and exercise choices.

According to his book (I've read it) and some of the people on his site there is.

"The vast majority of my patients, who adopt my nutritional and exercise recommendations for diabetes, become thin and non-diabetic. They are able to gradually discontinue their insulin and eventually their other medications."

I believe that he is describing control and the reversal of symptoms of diabetes. BTW, I don't mean to disparage his book or his plan . . . just pointing out a simple medical fact. Not only is diabetes not curable (although there is hope for a new transplantation of the islets of langerhans that is showing considerable promise), it is also a progressive disease. Perhaps you should take a look at the American (or Canadian) Diabetes Association site (there are links to both sites in one of the stickies).

Losing weight is probably the most important means for diabetic control. Even a loss of a mere 10% of body weight can make an amazing difference. I have managed to reduce all of my diabetes-related medications (Glyburide, Metformin, Actos, and Insulin) by 1/3 to 1/2 with a 20% weight loss (I still have a long way to go, of course).

Many diabetics are able to completely control their disease with diet and exercise alone.
