Default The Church of England is doing away with hymns?

I read somewhere that they are going to be doing U2 songs. Hmmm. Will they be charging for a 500 seat event?

I'm not at all a religious person but some hymns are lovely. It would be a shame to lose them, they are part of our cultural heritage.

Oh I hope not - I quite like hymns. We often sing-a-long to Songs of Praise!

That's the only reason I went to church...

And yes I did sing a long to Songs of Praise too!

They can't possibly think about doing away with hymns.... all the regular church goers in my little town, they're all 70+ wouldn't know who U2 are, let alone sing along with the songs.

I used to love Songs of Praise, did Sir Harry Secombe do it for a while or was that the other one on the other channel, remember last time I lived at home, most people only had four

NOt religioous myself but if they water down Christianity anymore - that will be worry I think as certain other faiths will take over.

I do like some hymns - Gracious SPirit Holy Ghost is a sweet/sad memeory cos we sang it next day in assembly when we found out our headmaster had died (he slumped at the piano at one of our concert performances (no we were not that bad, honest!). The next day - it was like abomb had dropped or something. Everyone walking around like zombies. He was such a great bloke. I think for some reason I was the only one in the school with dry eyes though. Even the toughs were grizzling. Considering how easily I usually blub that was odd.

One thing I hate about hymns though is everytime I hear them they have changed to bl**dy tune. I thought I knew how to sing All things Bright and Beautiful but keep hearing different tunes to it!!

I think our hymns should stay and Bono and U2 should carry on with their work that they do for their charities and such.

I'm a bit of a heathen really, but used to love going to Christmas Eve service, such a lovely time with the singing and the season, when I went last time which was when we were home for the millenium I took my kids, they weren't impressed, and neither was I, no traditional Christmas songs at all and loads of candles about to light, which we'd never seen in our church (CofE) before...and the vicar wasn't as nice as the lovely one's who I'd grown up with

The only time I go to church is for the children's nativity service on Christmas Eve - I love singing along with all the traditional carols - but this year it was weird, some of them had the same words but different tunes and then there were some tunes I knew but the words had changed. At the time I thought it was old age creepin' up on me - or possible the 3 or 4 glasses of mulled wine I'd had during the afternoon (a few neighbours called in so I had to be sociable ) but afterwards DH told me that all the people around us were as confused as I was - and I was SO looking forward to warbling along with Away In A Manger!
