Default Healthy sushi?

I'm going out for sushi tonight. Last night I had tempura (among other things that I don't know the name of) and it was sooo good, but it's deep fried so that's a given. lol Can anyone recommend some tasty healthy options?

i love sushi! stay away from anything that is deepfried- or has deepfried stuff in it. I like the spicy crab fillings!

Some of the fillings might have mayo in them so be on the look out for those as well. Or maybe the mayo in some rolls is a california thing, I dunno.. but this does exist! The soy sauce if you use it could help pack on some water weight over night, so don't be surprise if that happens. Watch the sake drinking!

Watch for any special sauces that come on some rolls.

Nigiri (not sure if that's spelled correctly!) It's a small filet of fish on top of some sticky rice. Add a little bit of wasabi, dip in soy sauce. It's delicious!!

Don't forget the miso soup! It will have lotsa sodium, but just make sure you drink some extra water. It may have tofu in it which will help fill you up.

If you are more adventurous, try a seaweed salad. Or the edamame are usually a safe bet.

Sushi rice is made with sugar so just don't get duped into downing a bunch because it has a piece of tuna on top! Its major carb city!

California Rolls are made of just nori, rice, crab, cucumber, avocado. No sauces.

You can order Sashimi. That's just raw fish with rice and wasabi. No sauces either.

Spicy rolls usually have mayo in them, but it's such a small amount. I love spicy tuna and salmon rolls.

Edemame are good to snack on [cooked soybeans].

Yakitori or kushiyaki are safe bets. These are grilled meats and fish.

nigirisushi (a piece of raw fish on rice) is pretty simple and healthy -- if you like variety, go for a chirashi (a bowl of sushi rice with a variety of raw fish on top of it)

California and Spicy Tuna Rolls are generally pretty healthy -- but beware of any rolls with fancy names ("Dragon Roll" "Las Vegas Roll" "Hunky Hunk Elvis Roll" ... ok, maybe I made up that last one )-- those generally are ladened with avocado, teriyaki sauce, mayo and/or deep-fried tempura.

If the sushi place has a picture menu -- it's that much easier to avoid the fatty ones.

And if you do have the opportunity (and budget) to try quality ootoro sushi (fatty tuna), I'd highly recommend it. The calories & the $$$ are well worth it in my opinion.

I ended up having some california rolls and then also raw fish on rice which looks like it may be called nigirisushi from what AquaWarlock said. And I also ate soooo much edamame, I love those soybeans. And I had some miso soup. All very yummy.

I do need to qualify this by saying that a night of drinking followed (including saki bullseyes, gross but fun! lol) so I didn't exactly have a healthy day overall. But you gotta pick your battles, right? Just because I was drinking didn't mean I wanted to eat unhealthy deep fried stuff with it. So thanks for the help everyone!

Just fyi as far as California rolls go--most sushi chefs make them by smearing Japanese mayo on the seaweed before adding the other ingredients and rolling them up. You usually can't see it but they do sneak it in there--it helps everything stick together and complements the avocado pretty well. But you can always ask for them to leave the mayo out when you order.
