Default Finally have my Sonoma book!

At long last! I've been following the tips and recipes I've found online, mostly at this site but haven't had the book until now. It just became available in the UK. I looked at it like wow, that's one thick diet book, must be very intricate. But it turns out half of it is yummy recipes and menus and the actual diet portion is pretty simple, as far as diets go. I haven't officially started Wave 1 yet (I am going to the grocery store tomorrow) but I did measure my plate and am following the Wave 1 percentages. I made the switch to whole grains months ago so I'm not at all worried about giving up refined flour products. And I don't really eat much in the way of sweets. I am most reluctant to give up the sprinkle of sugar on my oatmeal (honestly, it's just a tad) and my daily Pepsi. Other than that, I don't eat much sugar at all but I do look forward to that 1 Pepsi I have weaned myself down to! I guess I can give up my cran-apple oatmeal (see the recipes section of this forum for steel-cut oats thread) for 10 days, though.

I'm very much looking forward to the trying the recipes in the book. They so do not look like your average "diet" recipe! My entire family loves every Sonoma-inspired recipe I've cooked for them the last few months so that's no problem at all. In fact, it's a real pleasure to have even more to try now.

*sigh* I guess the sooner I officially start Wave 1, the sooner it'lll be over!

I started Wave 1 yesterday. All I can say is - forget missing sugar! I had more trouble foregoing second helpings of the toasted quinoa pilaf! That stuff was awesome! Has anyone else tried it? If not, then make sure you do soon. I had it for my grain at lunch today. It reheats well. Mmmmm, I may even have it for dinner tonight, it's that great!

By the way, I was tempted a few times today. Not because I was hungry but because I'm trying to break the Pepsi habit. All I had to do was remember that I lost 1 pound just from yesterday, because of Day 1 of Wave 1. That's totally enough motivation to help me pass up the junk.

And I've also found a new favorite food. Bottled roasted red peppers. They're an ingredient for the quinoa pilaf but tasty enought to eat on their own, with a bit of feta sprinkled over them. They'd probably even be good on wholemeal bread with feta, as a sandwhich.

Day 3 of Wave 1. Today has been the hardest. I've had an awful headache today from sugar withdrawal, I would imagine. Plus, I made a lamb roast for dinner. It was Sonoma-friendly but not a Sonoma recipe so I didn't leave the table feeling as satisfied as I normally do. I'm feeling a major snack attack coming on. *grits teeth* I should have made some roasted veggies or something to go along with it instead of just 50% of a plate filled with bussel sprouts. I love brussel sprouts but they were a bit boring. I'm convinced that 95% of Sonoma success is mental - because the food is so exciting and flavorful and colorful, it makes you feel more sated after a meal.

OOOOH! I just remembered I can still have some almonds. *rummages in desk drawer for bag of nuts* I knew I saved that serving for some reason!

It's funny - I would have thought that giving up Pepsi or sugar in my tea would have been the hardest part of Wave 1. But you know the one and only thing I have found truly impossible? Giving up that bit of butter on my toast. How weird is it that that's my one cheat? I'd never have thought that would be the problem. I do use heart-healthy Flora, at least and I try to be a bit stingy with it, too but I cannot stand the thought of eating dry toast.

Grrrrr. I was going like gangbusters and then had a bit of a cheat at the family BBQ today. If I were calorie counting, I wouldn't worry about what I ate. I indulged but in small portions. I had 2 small hamburgers but they were grilled. Not great but not the end of the world. I'm more worried about the fact that I had them on white buns. Plus I had a few crisps (potato chips) and a small piece of chocolate cake. I am soooo mad at myself! Believe me, I am sitting here regretting it because I have horrible heartburn and those burgers keep repeating on me. My hubby made a good point - that my body is not used to those kinds of icky foods anymore and is not processing it very well.

*sigh* Time to gt over it and forge ahead. The way I feel right now, it'll be a while before I even feel like cheating again!
