When I was overweight I had an hourglass shape, albeit a thick and flabby one. Now that I am at a normal BMI, my shape has become -to put it kindly- "athletic." And it's not just me. Over and over again, in the photos of many of my weight-reduced sisters, I see the same thing - nearly straight between ribcage and hips. I don't get it. This is not what's "supposed" to happen, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with excess skin (the skin around my waist is taut). Unlike many maintainers on this board, I lost a relatively modest 40 pounds or so, but the amount of weight lost also doesn't seem to have much to do with this phenomenon (see photos here: http://www.precisionnutrition.com/winners-july-2013 e.g. Sue, Lisa and Kathy). Maybe age? If you're over 30 you can kiss your waist goodbye?
I'm curious to know if any of you regained (or retained) an hourglass shape with a nipped-in waist after you lost weight, and if so, how old are you? While I know I will never look like this: http://affitnityblog.com/the-fitness...bethany-nelson, I was at least hoping for a waist-to-hip ratio of .75. Instead, at 5'2" my hips are 34" but my waist is stubbornly 27.5. Since I have broad shoulders from weight training, and my thighs are still "sturdy," the overall impression I give when naked is straight up and down (very much like the Grand Prize Winner Sue on the Precision Nutrition website). I know that as far as body issues go, this is a trivial complaint compared to those of you battling excess skin, dropped abdomens, etc, but it really has become a big pet peeve of mine.
