Significantly far away from the starting line

  • I just got back from my official weigh-in, not only did I get my 2 free weeks for losing .5 pounds after Valentine's, but I hit my 20 pound mark!

I was looking forward to 20 pounds lost, because it felt "considerable" to me. When sometime tells me they have lost 20 pounds...I think, "Wow! That's great! That's a lot of weight!"

So for me...there is no turning back now. I'm 20 pounds away from my starting line. I am fully IN my journey now. Can anyone relate to that?

For you- what is/was your "considerable" amount of weight loss to feel like you are in the "thin" of it?
  • YAY!!! Great job!!

Yeah, I think it was definitely 20lbs when I was first starting. It felt "real" then and not just like a weight fluctuation. I was really losing. And I had dropped a size and needed new clothes and could really feel the loss.

After that, it's each time I get into "uncharted territory." I tend to lose for a while, freak out and maintain for a while and gain back a few pounds so each time I break into new progress again, I know it's on.

Also, each time I can do something physically that I couldn't before. Sometimes little things like wrap a towel all the way around me, or walk up a flight of stairs without being winded or notice new muscles in the mirror that are no longer covered up but definitely the big things - being able to buy clothes in the non-plus section and the first time I ran a 5k (in a workout). When those NSVs happen, I know that I'm really doing this and I'm never going back.

Oh Goodness...this is a big one for me! I actually took home one of the towels from the gym to do before and progress pictures with. It really gets me that their towels are SOOO tiny.
  • 20lbs!!!! You go girl!!!! And congrats on earning the free weeks!!
  • Way to go--your hard work is really paying off!

I'm at 12 lbs (17 from my highest weight) so I'm not sure what will feel 'real' to me--the things that feel 'real' right now are NSV--all my jeans are too big in the waist. I definitely pant less climbing stairs at work. I have brought my lunch to work for the last 6 weeks. We hardly go out to eat (once a week compared to a lot more).

I'm looking forward to hitting 20--and from experience, I think it'll start showing about 25 lbs--especially in my face.
  • Congrats! Thats awesome
  • Congrats!!!
  • Congrats on the free weeks - I've been keeping my fingers crossed for you!!

I think 25 lbs will be a big milestone and I'll feel like I'm REALLY doing this, since that will be 10% total loss. And 30 will be a very big deal, because that will put me more than halfway to my current ticker goal/all time low.

But really, every 5 lbs is exciting for me, and I look so forward to getting to change my chickie avatar.
  • Thanks, April! I remember joining on the day that you were getting ready to come back. I think we've come a long way in that time. Don't you?
  • Honestly, I have to lose around 65-70 pounds before it feels 'real' to me. I don't ever feel any different at 210 than I do at 270, and I've lost and gained 50 pounds so many times that it all seems like no big deal until I hit that 70ish pounds gone mark.

  • Congratulations, that's really awesome!!!

I didnt feel that great about any losses until I made it into weights that I had never been at (except maybe when I was in middle school). So that would have been when I hit the 250s.
Although I now look at every 20lbs as a huge loss!
Can't wait to congrats you again after the next 20!
  • I meant to add, it's really taken me losing 100lbs to feel like I made some progress.

The only thing is now, at 221, this was my starting point the last time I lost 50lbs...That seems like so much more to lose but I will plug away, one pound at a time! One-derland is my current mini goal and that point, I'll be almost to the halfway point so I will ride the high of that accomplishment!
  • Twenty pounds is a lot! A friend asked me to help load some things into her car, and it included two 10 lb dumbells. Gosh, I never knew how heavy only 10 lbs could be! (When I work out, I don't use anything heavier than 5lbs) The two of them together were almost unmanageable --- well, at least uncomfortable to lift. Find something that you know is 20 lbs, and really get a handle on what you've accomplished! Way to go!

I'm actually really close to my lowest weight from the last time I lost a major amount of weight. I hit 200 for about 10 minutes, then slowly crept back upward on the scale. I'm really aware of where I am in this journey right now - predictably, things have slowed down as I approach the turning point. But, like Elvislover, I don't think it will be really thrilling to me until I hit that mark or lower.

Funny how having to lose it again somehow minimizes your hard work... at least for me. If I hit onederland, it will be new territory, since I haven't been there since I was a senior in high school. Who knows what kind of issues will come to the surface. This time around, I've really tried to work on the mental picture. I'm an emotional eater, and remaining vigilant and aware of what's going on around me and IN MY HEAD is paramount this time.
