Running on a treadmill

  • Kind of scared to run on a treadmill, walking and walking on a incline are fine but worried I may loose my balance if I began to run. Anyone else feel this way, is there a way to overcome it?
  • The back of my treadmill stops at the brickwall of my basement, and I am not the most coordinated person, so I was nervous, but I hopped on and did it anyway. I never fell.....knock on wood.
  • Start out with a very slow jog and gradually increase speed as you become comfortable.
  • You can do it. Just gotta try and get over the fear.
  • That used to be my fear and finally I just did it and now I can't believe I was ever worried.
  • Just remember you don't have to go directly from walking to sprinting in one press of a button! Slowly up your speed by .1 intervals, speed walk for a bit, then jog, then just continue slowly as you feel comfortable. No need to go too fast too quickly!
  • Hello!

I sometimes get the same feeling... But I find focusing on something directly in front of me works, whether it's a spot on the wall or perhaps the television. But you only have to look at it for about the first 30 seconds - 1 minute, once you've done that you've established your centre of gravity and it's easier to find your balance... But make sure you're still concentrated on running, because sometimes I do this and I run into the front of the treadmill because I want to get to whatever I'm looking at, haha!

  • Make sure you hydrate before you exercise (and keep a bottle of water with you). That should help with some dizziness you could experience. I personally find that I only become dizzy when I am dehydrated. Start out slow. Don't push yourself too hard. Be realistic.
  • I was completely freaked out about getting on the treadmill! My trainer then told me she was putting me on it, regardless the next time we trained. So I got a good friend who stood right next to me and encouraged me the entire time. Kept the incline at 0 the first time, and SLOWLY raised the speed. that was in March, I was hopping off and on it tonight doing intervals! If I can do it, you can!! And remember you can hold on, at first, just don't keep holding on, because that will support part of your weight and you won't get as good of a workout (that's what I was told!) Good luck!!!
