Default Does running an hour on a treadmill everyday makes your scale slightly heavier?

I wonder about this...
Does running an hour on a treadmill everyday make you gain weight? I mean like muscle weight or any kind?

like say today im 150 and then after running for like 2 days you see 151 or 152 is it due to the running?

Yes and no. It's not muscle gain going on...to gain any significant amount of muscle, you have to work harder and for a much longer period of time.

HOWEVER, any change in your exercise plan can result in an upward scale blip. If your muscles aren't used to the exercise, they can swell a bit, and that extra water will make the scale blip upward temporarily.

But if your muscles aren't used to the exercise, you're not able to run for an hour to begin with. Six miles/10K isn't a distance most people can just wow! look! I can run! fall into-- you build up to that kind of distance. (So the initial muscle/water thing would have been several miles' capability ago in terms of fitness.)

I'd say in the long term that kind of exercise would make you lose weight, unless you are eating some SERIOUS calories

That makes two of us!

I tend to agree with mandalinn (any change in routine can cause an upward blip..I know when I started working out with my trainer, I seemed to lose and gain the same two lbs, but I was certainly losing inches before the weight started coming off). Could be water retention if you are tearing down muscle each time.

But MariaMaria brings up a good point, too..running an hour on the treadmill isn't something a terribly out of shape person could just pick up and do. ZelZel, is this part of your normal routine, or have you been away from exercise for awile?

I agree wiht this! You are doing good, and while you may not be losing lbs on the schale you are most likely dropping inches like a bad habit.

you'll get there! Weight loss is not a sprint, its a marathon!

Dude - I can only do 27 minutes running right now, I couldn't even imagine doing 27 minutes more!! Ok, well, maybe I could, but I wouldn't want to ! lol.

Actually, I don't think that's probably true. First off, I have run for an hour and never covered 6 miles, so since we don't know your running speed, you might have run anywhere from a 5k to a 10k. Also, depending what other cardio has been going on, you might have built up the lung capacity to run without actually running. The first time I actually ran outside, I'd been using the elliptical daily for 6 months, and was able to easily run 4 miles without building up in any way (well OK, not easily, but I didn't die).

In fact, even if you've never run 2 days IN A ROW before, it might make a difference in terms of muscle swelling, no matter how often you'd run previously. Bottom line - if running every day is something you have done regularly before, it probably didn't cause a scale blip. But if it's different, in duration, in speed, in frequency, etc, it's very possible you have some muscle swelling going on.

When I started really revving up my running distances I lost 5 pounds really fast without changing anything else. Now in an hour I run about 6.5-7 miles and no this does not cause me to gain weight and I doubt it would make anyone gain weight. The longer you're doing cardio activity the more fat you burn. Weigh once a week to get a better idea of what's going on.

Maybe this is just me, but if I gained 2 lbs the first thing I'd look at is my food intake, not the hour of running I did.

How are your calories? Lots of salt lately?

Depends how long you've been doing that. I'd start measuring certain parts of your body to see if they are going down to see if it's muscle you are building. And yeah, make sure the food you are fueling with is the good stuff or that hour run was for nothing

It's probably just re-starting the exercising then. I wouldn't stress over it - give yourself a month to get back into things and I am sure the scale will be your friend again!
