What is the best time to workout?

  • I've heard to wait an hour after you eat to workout. But I'm wondering what the best time would be, morning afternoon evening? Any advice on this would be great. Thanks in advance =)
  • Anytime you can fit it into your scedule. I hate working out in mornings I have no energy the best time for me is in the afternoons or early evenings. But again it all depends on when you can fit it in, and when you think you can do it best.
  • I agree with MiZ. Anytime you can get there is what you should do. Personally, I am not going to wake up at 4:00am to go to the gym (the walking zombie look doesn't work for me), and I'm stuck in the office from 8:00 to 5:00 every day. So the only time that I can go is right after work.
  • Thank you!
  • Ive never heard you should wait an hour after working out before eating, I always eat as soon as I can after working out since I'm pretty ravenous! I find working out in the morning works for me since then there are less things to crop up during the day to become excuses or reasons not to go. But thats just me I'm lucky that I dont start work until midday
  • The best time to workout is whatever time you can stick with. Whatever time fits into your routine best (may be first thing in morning, right after work/school or even splitting your workout into sections if needed for time-constraints). My best workout time is whenever I can get 60-min free, usually right after work (sometimes I just do 10-, 20-, or 30-min workouts when short on time and try to tally up 50-min throughout the day).

I'd say wait 30-min after eating before working out, but it depends on the workout (for more intense workouts, wait longer/til food settles; for lighter workouts, may not have to wait as long).
  • I'm gonna go with what most people have said - as long as it's something you can stick with, it's good. I work out evenings, when I can. It's only about 3 times a week right now. And Friday mornings. But my class schedule is nuts.

Three times a week is definitely a good start! My class schedule is crazy two days out of the week, too, but I count some of the time I spend walking to/from/around campus as exercise for the week. If you have to walk at all, especially up stairs (the elevators are so slow on my campus, you can walk up eight flights of stairs in the time it takes to come to you, seriously), that counts as activity as well.
  • I agree with others, the best time is ANY TIME you can work out. actually WORKING OUT is the most important part =)

However, studies have shown that if you work out first thing in the morning, BEFORE eating, that your body is then forced to use the fat stored for energy. This has worked wonders for me. When I work out in the afternoons I lose less during those weeks. Of course, I am no scientist but the studies are varied and the studies I found said this and so did my trainer and it seems to hold true, at least for me. =)

I then eat immediately after working out and drink milk for protein! Studies have also shown that those who drink skim milk (2 cups) after doing weight training lose up to 1lb more a week then those that drink protein/sugar shakes.

I read way TOO many studies haha =)
  • Kriz- I'm going to test the theory of morning workouts but doing my cardio in the morning in Feb. I'll let you ladies know if it makes any difference for my weight loss.

Yay! Good luck lady! Please do let us know how it works out and if it makes a difference!
  • I have also heard morning is more effective but I agree with most everyone else that the best time is a time that you will be most likely to actually workout.
I WISH I could get myself going in the morning to work out but unless I find a way to program my TV to play my workout video when I get up and I wear my workout clothes to bed it probably wont happen.
  • I've seen those studies too about it being better to work out in the morning, before you eat, but that seriously just doesn't work for me. If I work out in the morning, I have to eat something small (half a banana, a tbsp of peanut butter, etc.) or else I am ravenous, can't focus on the workout, and don't do as well of a job as I would if I worked out later, or ate something before the workout. It's all a very personal thing, though.
  • One more person here saying, "whatever time you can make yourself do it". Sometimes that's the morning; sometimes it's the evening. Whenever you can make it work!
  • Everyone has his or her own personal "sweet time" for workouts.

For me I HATE morning workouts because I am always hungry and sleepy and don't have energy. Evenings right after work before dinner are my preferred time.
